Hi. I am planning to go to BKK from LAX in late Dec. (around 12/17-12/18) and come back to LAX in early Jan. (around 1/6)....I am searching for a cheap airfare, but right now the cheapest I can get is around $1,200, via Orbitz, Travelociy, etc. Does anyone have a better idea?? BTW, thank you for you guys's input in my other posting...I really appreciate it!!

I usually go around the same time. If you go before New Years (which I like to do), I usually get about $800-900 RT via Yahoo travel which uses travelocity. After new years, you can usually do about 700 RT. I usually buy around 1 month ahead of traveling. The price might drop when you buy your ticket near the travel date.

You guys are too expensive. I am in LA and I have always gone for 640-740 RT. Today I just got a RT with Cathay form OCt. 29-Dec. 2 for 795. I was originally on JAP for 740 (710 if not on the weekend), but they could not confirm the Jan. 2 day. I have always gone in Dec.coming back Jan. 2 with KAL for 830. PM me for my TG travel agent in H-wood or call me at (714) 369-9907, If you are a newbie, take me out to dinner and I will save you alot of money by giving good advice. Riceman

Hi mikenakajima2005 I like China Airlines http://www.china-airlines.com. They are great and they give milage away like the whores they are. The flight attendants aren't the cranky walruses you may be used to on an American flag carrier either. They are beautiful and very attentive. Also you can get a great deal if you buy an open return (no extra charge) and upgrade the long leg of your return to business class while in BKK at the airport. You don't want to confuse these guys with Air China. China Airlines is Taiwanese (new fleet of planes great safety record) and Air China is a mainland airline filled with old-fat-smoking-farting, cheap charlie chinese. Probably got a deal on the plane too from the Ruskies... Here also are some good sites to troll for the best prices: http://www.china-airlines.com http://www.asaptickets.com/ http://www.mobissimo.com/search_airfare.php http://www.sidestep.com this does install a llight client and is harmless they are written about in USA today and Business Week, so they aren't spammers or spies. http://www.orbitz.com sometimes good sometimes sucks... http://www.airgorilla.com/ http://www.travelzoo.com http://www.travelocity.com have to register which is a pain in the ass. http://www.cheaptickets.com actually used them once but rarely are they the cheapest. Eva Airlines is also good I've flown them but I like China better. Thai airways is great and occassionally they have a deal from LAX to BKK and it is a direct flight so it might be worth a little more ($100-$200) to avoid a layover in BFE, up to ypu. Good luck.

Thanks Sanook, However I don't see that as bad statistically they have a great record in my book, and if you compare them to other airlines especially Asian ones you'll see I am right: http://www.airsafe.com/events/regions/asia.htm There was that crash in the fog in South Korea a few years ago (1) but the only other thing is SARS. I knew about the mountain thing since it happened. SARS scares are for pussies anyway. Besides everyone flying to Asia even in a crop duster risks SARS. The fall in tourist dollars as a result of SARS scares killed far more poor asians through starvation and depravation than SARS ever did. Now it is bird flu or some such other pussy hand wringing wail. What has it been in LOS died from Bird Flu? Three or 4 people, tragic to be sure but come on people act like it is "12 Monkeys" or something. For example maybe people should worry more about Bubonic Plague as there were 3000 cases worldwide last year: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/03/0310_040310_blackdeath_2.html United and American have, even not counting Sept 11th, have had enormous safety problems. These guys were just featured last week on the Discovery Channel program; "Seconds From Disaster", I mean f*** c'mon...I could go on and on about other carriers though and give more definitive links but that's pointless. I mean it wasn't long ago a maybe 11 months about that some United plane blew its engines out at the BKK airport on abort. Not to knock United mind you but I am just not going to pay $3K+ USD for a ticket on them to BKK. Besides their safety record makes me blanch compared to China Air. Respectfully I think you need to go back and check your site link a little better. One actual accident does not the worst record make. Besides I think they have the newest fleet of planes in Asia, pretty sure but not positive and it may be one of the newest fleets in the world. My assertion is based upon fleet aircraft flying not ordered. I am sorry to be so anal about this it is a subject that has always held my attention and plays a role in my ticketing decision. I have a bit of an aviation background so I tend to be picky about who I'll fly. Again that's just me but I've tried to get my decision drivers out there so people know my leanings and can make there own choices with the facts. I hope I didn't piss you off.

Torq Not to "rain on your parade" but wasn't China Airlines the one that had the 20 YO B-747 break-up in clear weather on takeoff from Tiawan a couple of years back? If I remember correctly the fuselage was welded togeher just behind the upper deck and this contributed to the accident.. Sorry mate, but I will spend the extra bucks for SQ or TH non-stop to Asia, nicer, newer and better. New fleet of planes?? Relitive to who?? Disclaimer: I have never flown of China Airways so I cannot comment on the service I have been on airplanes that have had brand new modern interiors (still had new leather smell), and new paint jobs; however when I looked at the airworthiness cert over the forward door the dates indicated that the aircraft was 15+ years old The only fatal accident that SQ has had was on takeoff from Tiawan, so this might be a factor

Relative to Boeing - China just upgraded their fleet of inter-continetal planes with Boeing's latest 747-400F, planes that are fresh off the assembly. It's well-known that CI has had a safety record issue in the 80s (20 years ago!), but that they aggressively overhauled their operations, and safety and maintenance procedures since then, with the net result that you are flying on brand new planes on the US-Asia routes. I've flown with them for the past 2 years, and intend to continue to do so, as they have given me no reason to be concerned, and they have excellent and friendly in-flight service. Of course, as always, YMMV - but I really suggest you update your flight safety information to more current information.

No rain at all that was in fact the accident we were talking about. It is the one that the links referred to. All statistics are available on the web as well as fleet ages for all airlines. China Airlines does have one of the newest fleets (that is age of aircraft) in the world. I am not talking about refits. Anyway I am not some China Airlines spokesmen it is just that I am anal about these things and I like flying them. I fly Alaska Airlines too and they have a great safety record. Several years ago they had a crash due to a design and maitenance process problem with a tail flight control screw on an MD-80 model. As a result of this the handling and maitenance of this type of aircraft was changed all over the world in hopefully all fleets, certainly those flying in or to the US. I fly Alaska still but I try to avoid MD-80s and had tried for years before that too. That plane is uncomfortable and it sucks all around. Boeing of course bought McDonnell Douglas years ago and kept the production line in Long Beach going for a while and renamed the MD-80 the 717. There have also been some improvements to the plane as a 717. I don't know if they still make them. Bangkok Air flies the 717 though and keeps them up well. I feel safer on theirs too. Anyway don't know if this helps. Hope it does.
