There are many good deals now from the U.S. on NWA (Northwest Airlines). Check their website or better yet call an agent. The flight I am working on now is for travel from Atlanta to Bangkok for $474. I'm sure about $600 with taxes but a darn good deal from the East Coast to LOS. Here is the deal I found for ATL-BKK with the specifics from the website. NWA is a SkyTeam member.

NEW! WOW! Northwest Airlines takes you to Bangkok, Thailand for only $444 round-trip on Oct. 3-31 departures. Travel Fri.-Sun. each way or add $15 per direction. A 14-day advance purchase required. Trips started on or before Oct. 2 are $474 round-trip and valid Mon.-Thurs. Add $25 per direction for other travel days. Stay 3-30 days. Purchase by Sept. 1.

See you in LOS,

I checked out that Web site and it does indeed say $444 round-trip, but I think it may be an error. According to what I can see on NWA's Website, the price R/T is about $890, punching in a bunch of departure dates for a 10-day trip between Oct. 2 and Oct.31. I could be off on this, but if there is a "super low" rate, it is for a very, very specific departure and return date. I know in the past NWA has offered some specials "with prices from $XXX," but you could never get tjhe lowest $XXX price. The $890 price isn't a bad one, but for about $60 more, you can fly the TG non-stop between JFK and BKK. Still, there are some reasons for choosing NWA- you earn Frequent Flyer points on their flights to BKK even in Q class, you don't get FF miles on Thai for their heavily discounted tickets to BKK.

By all means, correct me if I've missed something here. I'd love to get a $444 R/T to BKK.

Called and spoke to a NWA ticket agent. Best fare with taxes I can get is $620. Catch is it has to be on NWA flights 3 and 14 and go through Minneapolis. The kicker is the flight from Minneapolis to Tokyo which is dirt cheap on the above flight numbers. Good only for travel on a Saturday. So, Oct 8 through 15 or 22 is $620. From Atlanta of course. I think I'm going!

Isn't NW on the cusp of a major mechanics strike? Enjoy. I'd rather not risk a MX delay or failure due to still-green scabs.

Yes, that is true. My friend who is a mechanic for Delta mentioned the strike and he did raise the safety question. Just thought I would pass it along as it does seem to be a terribly good deal.

Oh well. :D

Just for the record, I tried yahoo and nwa.com and nothing came back for much less than $1K from my departure point.

LastSurvivor-
I owe you dinner and drinks and at least a bar fine. I booked through nwa.com and got NYC (Newark Intl) to BKK round-trip for $618.55, all taxes, etc. included. Trip is booked and paid for. Only inconvenience I see is the bad arrival time, but that is minor compared to saving $250 to $300, plus this trip will bump me up a Fequent Flyer member category. If you'll be in BKK Oct. 15-Oct. 22, send me a PM and I'll make good my promise.
Many thanks for the tip.

Evil,

No thanks necessary. Just glad I could help out. I'm about to book on NWA for $620.15 RT from Atlanta. Most likely 10/8-10/15. Only for 5 days but that will put me into Platinum Medallion on Delta which means access to all the airport lounges. Two of my co-workers are taking advantage of this deal. One is making his first trip to LOS for 3 weeks. Not a bad way to start your addiction to that part of the world. Can't believe you beat my price by $1.60.

I'll take you up on the drinks and dinner but not sure the tgf will go for the bar fine. Look forward to meeting up in the future.

I'm booked for $620.15 from ATL-BKK on Oct 8 returning Oct 15. I asked about the Mechanics strike and the impact on travel. I was assured they will be at 100% operational status even with the strike and if something happens to one of my flights I will be booked on another airline. Now thats customer service. Also, selected my seats during the online reservation process and a couple of the seats came back as "not assigned" which I assume means someone was making a reservation at the same time. Called the reservation number and not only was I able to select my seats but was able to choose exit row seats. Korean, also a skyteam member, has never given me this option.. Always you had to choose the seats at check-in and no matter how early I got to the airport it seemed impossible to get those premium seats. Agent said that because I am an elite member on Delta I can choose my seats and even get upgraded to first on the domestic portions of my ticket. She even allowed me to surf to seatguru.com to help me pick my seats. DAMN. Evil, might want to make a call if you want exit row seats. fyi, the Airbus A330-200 which is the type of plane from Tokyo to Bangkok has AC power ports on rows 10-23 in coach class. Just bring your regular AC adaptor and you've got movies, games or field reports.
