On my next trip, I'm invited to accompany some business colleagues (Thai couple) to Hanoi...3 days. I'll be in Bkk on a Tourist visa. What do I need for entry to ViteNam (with USA passport) ?

You need to get a visa to visit anywhere in Vietnam. A few thousand baht and a few days, you can go to the Embassy yourself on Wireless Road or a travel agent can take care of that hassle for you for a small fee above the regular price.

I will post my comments about HCMC in another section shortly, but the short answer is that it is well worth a visit.

I have had the pleasure to be in Vietnam 8 times in the last 7 years,,, unless the rules have changed you MUST get a Visa BEFORE arrival.
It is considered very important that the communist party check your credentials very carefully before allowing your visa ( you may be a capitalist pig looking to organise the over-throw of the governemnt) ???
We would all consider that a joke but not the Viet gov.

Hanoi I never did enjoy,, I prefer Saigon, Da Lat, Hue, Da nang etc,, but the old French buildings may be of interest in Hanoi. Make sure you sample the "cafe sua nuuk da"
ice coffee with milk,,,, the one good thing the French gave to this country. The bread is excellent also,, try the morning offerings of bread roll with several forms of pork plus salad,, is excellent.
Undoubtably you will also be offered the Pho Bo ( Beef Soup) it is great and very cheap,,, bowl of various pieces of beef with noodles in a soup.

Enjoy what I believe will soon become the new SE Asian major tourist attraction because Thailand is pricing itself out of the business.

Cheers
Mel.

Do a google on Vietnam consulate or embassy in US. You can send your passport (fedex) to them up to three months ahead of time, along with a fee (about $35, I think, could have been more...) and an application which is downloadable from the website.

They will fedex your pp back to you with a nice visa page attached (signed by "Dang The Hung" -- really) and you're set to go.

I really enjoyed Ho Chi Minh City and took a day trip to the Mekong Delta. Didn't p4p, but look in FR's outside thailand for some threads.

I went from BKK for three nights on Thai airways for about $200 rt, and stayed at an old colonial place called "The Grand Hotel" on Dong Koi St, right in the heart of Saigon and close to the river. About $60 a night. Take a riverboat dinner cruise on the Saigon River -- a must. Ben Thanh market also amazing. Walking around at night is something -- everybody is out and about like Hong Kong, but much less developed. Seemed extremely safe and friendly. Except for the traffic -- you have to learn to cross streets swamped with motorcycles without traffic signals (hint -- you just walk steady and let them avoid YOU. It's like walking through a river of fish).

Good luck!

Phil

MFM: I'm pretty sure that when you arrive at the immigration counters, on the far right is a section for visas for those who have arrived without one. But as Mel says, get one before you go there.

Do some research because last time I went (Fall '04) you could not enter without getting your visa ahead of time. (not like Laos, where you can do it at the border).
