qantas qf2 flying via stansted to bangkok add 1 hour 30 minute to flight time

yes, this due to the big fire at the fuel storage depot last week, BAA (British Airports Authority) are rationing fuel, so many long haul flights have to refuel enroot.

Let me get this right....

LHR to Stansted....refuel...onto BKK....

I'm sure there is a logic to this but I just don't see it.

Both airports in UK, so all fuel coming from UK. Twice the take offs...so more burning fuel.

For those that don't know Stansted is on the opposite side of London...approx 50 miles away.

Anyone understand the logic that presumably is there but not conveyed in the original post?

edit:...if this is a short term thing, how come they are selling tickets for this up to August 2006

Still doesn't explain this....you say it's because they are cheap??

Presumably, this costs more than going direct?..and if fuel is rationed, it doesn't sound like it's their decision, so how come Thai and BA are not rationed?

....or is this a BAA Anti Australian Policy??

Frankly, I'd give that my whole hearted support!!!!

The fuel at Stansted comes from a different depot on the other side of London. As you cannot go from one side of London to another by rail it would involve trucking fuel from this depot, through London to Heathrow.

In all 24 fuel tanks were destroyed so whatever the solution it will not be 'short term'.

As for BAA doing this, "What is fit for the goose is fit for the gander". Last year when a large porton of fuel was contaminated in Sydney, Qantas got its whole allocation and everyone else had to stop in Melbourne or Brisbane to refuel...

I'm not sure if this is the case this time around but I flew Quantas from Stanstead once before (December 2001). It turned out to be BMI from Stanstead to Frankfurt then a quick plane change to a 747 on to BKK.

It was a scheduled switch as an (effectivley) direct flight so there was no waiting time in Frankfurt just a mad rush from one plane to the next.
