I'm flying in that same time frame but on Cathay Pacific for $895. I wanted to stop in Hong Kong on the way there.
The only times I have nearly died on an aircraft was on Cathay Pacific, a near midair collision (800 feet) with a Northwest flight back in 1994. I don't really see myself dying on any aircraft, but the food taste better on Cathay, and they have a better entertainment system, plus I wanted to stop over in Hong Kong.

ive flown china air twice from honolulu and have no complaints. their service is actually better than nw.
their rates very competitive but china ff program sucks.....lol.

How does their ff program suck?
Regarding Cathay - my biggest complaint is how tiny their seats and their legroom is, compared to China Airlines (or other carriers)

if I want to use delta miles on china air hnl to bkk it cost 105,ooo miles.
if I want to use delta miles on nw it costs only 60,000 miles.

Sounds like that is an agreement with Delta and China Airlines. Not a reflection of China Air's frequent flier program. I'm a member of Delta Skymiles and just roll the miles into that account.
Anyway, flew China Air back to the states on Jan 11. No problems but service is a bit below most Asian carriers but above other U.S. carriers.

Correction to my earlier assessment of the small size of their seats - it turns out my ass was just huge. After losing 50 lbs/23kgs I found out that the seats appear to have gotten wider.

Congrats on the wieght loss, best move for your health!
I've flown China Air several times from Okinawa to Bangkok via Taipei so my attention was raised when I heard about the explosion/fire. Aside from that and an overall less than impressive safety record, I think China Air is good value for the money. Hot stewardesses for sure.
You get what you pay for with them, but a good deal on a ticket is a good deal on a ticket. The only reason to pay more for a ticket is shorter or no connection times IMO. Flying is inherently somewhat uncomfortable but business/first class fares are outrageous. WIth so many coach flights being half empty I find that 50% of the time I have a row of four seats to myself. Strap the belt over the blanket.......goodnight.
