I have to travel to BKK end of April 2006. My passport expires 6th September 2006 so has less than the 6 month rule required. Is there any alternative to getting a new passport early? Suggestions welcomed

I dont think you will be getting on the plain unless you get a new passport, the carrier will get fined if they let you travel. You will not make it out of the airport in BKK if they let you fly anyway, they will send you back on the first plain, but not befor they give you a grilling and a cavity search!! You have plenty of time to get a new passport.

The last time I renewed my passport it took less than 2 weeks, if you renew your pass port within 9 months of date of expiry it will be extended by the unexpired time left on your current passport. So if you renew your passport now it will be valid until September 2016. Thailand strictly keeps out those whose passports expire within six months; it is one way of keeping out cheapskates… BB

Thank Basil - it looks like thats the best option. I spoke to the embassy here in London and they say it is NOT a legal requirement but up to the discretion of the officer at the desk. Dont fancy an 11 hour flight only to get rejected though so new passport it is.

You can get a passport on the same day now so anyone checking it will not listen to any excuse you might come up with. I would say get a new one.
