Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 31 August 2006 :- Sukhumvit traffic snarls to get worse ============================ Construction of the BTS electric railway extension will affect commuters from tomorrow, when one lane of Sukhumvit Road will be closed at night. The lane closure will be around the clock from the beginning of next month and then be expanded to two lanes from mid-January, 2007 Field work has started with the removal of trees on the central reservation, where the pillars of the 5.25km elevated railway will stand from Onnuj to Sukhumvit Soi 107 (Soi Baring). From tomorrow onwards, the outbound lane adjacent to the central reservation will be closed between 10pm and 5am for relocation of phone lines. The lane will be closed around the clock from Oct 1 for relocation of power lines. The 24-hour closure will expand to the inbound lane next to the central reservation next January for the construction of BTS elevated railway structures including foundations, pillars, beams and elevated platforms. The closure of both lanes will start on the section of Sukhumvit Road between Onnuj and Bang Na from Jan 15, but the closure of the Bang Na-Soi Baring section, where traffic congestion is common, will wait for the school holidays and start on March 1. Prakin Arunotong, engineering manager of contractor Italian-Thai Development Plc, said his company would complete the construction in February 2009. It will keep the public informed of construction plans, the impact on traffic and detours, and accept complaints at http://www.bmamasstransit.com and at its 24-hour call centre on 02 320 2311. Expecting traffic chaos, Pol Maj Suksant Songprasert, traffic inspector at Samrong Nua police station, said although there will be detours, traffic will still be badly affected because of flyover construction. Srinakarin and Thang Rod Fai Kao roads will be the main detours. However, two flyovers on Srinakarin Road will be completed in February and April next year and repairs to Thang Rod Fai Kao Road will be finished within next month. Report from The Nation dated Thursday 26 September 2006 :- Avoid Sukhumvit roadworks : BMA ========================= One outbound lane on Sukhumvit Road will be closed from Sunday onward to allow construction work to extend the Skytrain. The closure will affect a two-kilometre stretch between Sukhumvit Soi 83 and Sukhumvit 101/1, which will have only two outbound lanes. "Motorists should avoid this secฌtion and use alternative routes," Bangkok Metropolitan Administration spokesman Isara Suntornwat said Tuesday. He suggested motorists could use the road along the old railway line that runs from Bangchak Petroleum Refinery to Sanphawut Road and then to Phuchao Samingprai Road. He said motorists could turn into Sukhumvit Soi 77, at On Nut, and go straight to Srinakharin Road, then to Theparak Road. "Motorists can also use the expressway and exit on the Bang Na Trat Road," Isara said. The other option is to go via the industrial ring road that runs from Rama III Road to the Phuchao Samingprai Intersection. Deputy chief of traffic at Phra Khanong police station, Lt Colonel Saranyu Chamnanrat, said traffic congestion could be expected on the outbound lanes especially in the evening after the lane is closed. "We are preparing to facilitate the traffic flow as best we can. We plan to hold the lights on green for longer for the outbound lanes," he said, adding that more traffic police officers would be positioned along the affected stretch.
