Well, you used to be able to reasonably argue over having your laptop searched -- well, the US dept of homeland security (Zee Vaterland Sicherheits Büro) has now corrected that, as they now have the right to cease, keep, and do whatever they want with your electronic devices.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/01/laptops-can-be-confiscated-and-searched-at-us-border-without-cau/

"In further evidence of our rapidly eroding civil liberties, the Department of Homeland Security disclosed today that US Customs and Border Protection and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement have the right to confiscate and search a traveler's laptop or other electronic device without any suspicion of wrongdoing. The rules -- which we reported on in February -- allow for searches of hard drives, flash drives, cellphones, iPods, pagers, and video or audio tapes, and specify that the agencies can "detain" belongings for a "reasonable period of time," (i.e., as long as they please). Additionally, the DHS can share the data found with other government agencies or private entities for translation, decryption, or (astoundingly vague) "other reasons." The DHS says the policies apply to anyone entering the country -- including US citizens -- and claim the measures are necessary to prevent terrorism. In other news, Big Brother issued a statement today guaranteeing a bonus for turning over family members suspected of crimethink to the Thought Police."

Glad I live in such a wonderful country - but I have no doubt, this is all being welcomed by the usual apologists..

Anyway, the key point here is to be careful, if you're stupid enough to travel with naughty pictures on your laptop, when returning from LOS.

Dump everything on an external drive, if you are concerned, and make sure that drive is encrypted (PGP comes to mind, or just use Apple's FileVault) - if you are paranoid and want to be absolutely safe, just mail the data back to you before you head back home.

Nice move iDuck.

You have information for the forum but half of the membership can not read it because you have them on iggy cuz they dissed APPL.

Really you shouldn't be so sensitive about your addiction to APPL, it is not your fault, it is an illness.

Ya know a couple of hours with a good psychologist should fix you up fine ...

I would recommend a couple of hours with a proctologist for iDuck.

I encrypt all my external drives with TrueCrypt, a free open-source disk encryption software application for Windows Vista/XP, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Encrypts either an entire drive, or creates a virtual encrypted drive within a file (named recipes.dat or msofficefont.dll for example).

People recommending encryption miss the point:

-If US Customs sees that you have an electronic device, they can ask to see the contents.
-If you say it's encrypted, they'll ask you for the key.
-If you say "no," they can put you in a holding cell until you say "yes."

The solution is not to encrypt a device moving through customs, the solution is to ensure that any data you don't want them to seize is never placed into their hands in the first place - in any form.

One part of a solution is to Encrypt, yes - but store on an internet-connected storage medium, not on a physical device you carry with you.

GMail is quite useful for that, as it provides 6GB of space (per account). An addon for Firefox (GSpace) allows you to use a GMail account somewhat like a remote disk drive.

And before the TrueCrypt-lovers remind us that TrueCrypt has the ability to create "secret" volumes, I'll point out that having TrueCrypt installed on your laptop at all is probably enough to alert US Customs to the fact that you might have created such a secret volume, and to take extra measures as they see fit. At the very least, I'd expect that they would image your disk for later analysis. The phrase "additional screening" also comes to mind. Yes, you could uninstall the program, but could you remove all traces of the program from the registry, swap file, and "deleted" disk sectors? One of the programs they use to analyze laptops, Encase, knows all the tricks you'll think of, and handles searching your computer automatically.

Give them an hour, and they'll probably know every picture you downloaded, every link you visited, every file you deleted (but has yet to be overwritten), every picture you viewed in memory that left an after image in the swap file.

Ah, given that I've said that, what's the point of bothering with encrypting your data at all - stored on a network drive or stored on your laptop? You previously viewed it in an unencrypted form, therefore recoverable residue usually exists somewhere on your laptop, and Encase can probably find it automatically. Residue, such as: temp files, swap files, "deleted" files that weren't overwritten, URL histories (to porn sites, Flickr), browser-saved passwords to Yahoo where you uploaded it, cached thumbnail files in Windows Explorer, Windows search index files, any backup programs you might be running, that Desktop background you unselected but never tracked down and deleted, Last Document history, Windows Picture Viewer cache files, etc.

Daffy, The great part is that it is a matter of choice. You don't have to live in such a wonderful country.

Don't want to appear completely uniformed, but would a simple picture of someone in the nude (TG) get you in trouble, or as I believe, there has to be a sex act being performed amongst persons not able to prove age, 18+
Are digital cameras being seized?

Good argument for the use of OS X Leopard's 'Back to My Mac' feature - mounts your home hard drive automatically on your laptop's desktop, as if it were another hard drive. Dump everything on there in your hotel.

When you disconnect, and travel, hardly any traces of your data remain (aside from what TJ pointed out) and you are good to go.

Why? I love the country, just not what the past 6-8 years have turned it into. I'd rather get things fixed, than run away, like some people would.

If you travel alone, and are returning from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam or the Philippines, you can virtually be guaranteed additional screening at US customs when you return home. A year or so ago, a US Custom's official at LAX told me that any guy who traveled alone on holiday from one of those countries was regarded as highly suspicious and would be given an additional search at LAX.

I get searched 90% of the time when returning from Thailand. And they always scroll through my iPod and camera, looking for inappropriate pornography and personal sex pictures.

Now I travel with two memory cards. One that remains in my camera with "normal" pictures, and another that is hidden. Since they are so small, they are very easy to hide. While there is nothing illegal on the hidden one, I don't want the embarrassment of having a custom's official looking at my personal sex adventures.

Be very careful.... If you are traveling alone from one of the aforementioned countries, your iPod, camera or laptop will most likely be searched when you return to the US. It has happened to me many, many times.

On the flip side, I have never once been searched in Thailand--just a simple check of my passport, but never my luggage or media.

What do they suspect such guys of? Paedophilia? Surely only a very small minority of guys who come over and pay for sex fall into that category? P4P? Is going abroad and having sex with women and paying them illegal in the states?

I'd wager that at least as many women who come over with their families go home with fake designer goods as men come over on their own and take photos of themselves having sex with prostitutes.
