This sounds like an off the wall question, but if the avian flu were to mutate to pass from person to person, which many experts seem to believe is only a matter of time, and were this to happen in SE Asia (highly likely), would all air travel from that region be shut down? I have read reports that countries are expected to seal the borders to air travel from the "infected" areas until the situation was "contained" (if that were possible). It just seems to me that governments might panic, refuse any travelers from areas affected by an outbreak, and people could get stuck there for long periods of time. Any thoughts? Yes, I know I am being somewhat paranoid.

I guess we won't know until it happens?

There's already another thread on that subject:

Jaypoet,

First there is a wealth of information already posted to BTF:

Next time UTFSE and post to an existing thread instead of starting a new one.

As for your question you will probably find the same type of screening that was used very effectively during SARS, to wit: those coming off an aircraft or those attempting to enter a transit area who appear to be sick will be taken to a quarantine area to be evaluated. If they test for the flu in question, they will be sent to a hospital for quarantine and treatment.

Make sure you have travel health insurance if this screening is put in place because you will not have the option to return home until you are cured or dead...

This whole forum is full of wankers!!

Unlike SARS... B-flu.. may not show ANY symptoms for 96 hours.. Like the current strains of flu... By the time its detected.. it's too f***in late,
The ONLY reason Vietnam and china have gotten away so far is that these people who have caught/died from it are to poor to travel...

When this happens.. and its a matter of time...

It will...

Tamiflu won't help either.. just makes the death less painful.

maccaler,

Where is BL when you need his. Your posting is the sensationalist bullshit he loves to rail against.

From the CDC website:

Flu viruses spread in respiratory droplets caused by coughing and sneezing. They usually spread from person to person, though sometimes people become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 days after becoming sick.

Whilst it is possible for one a person to infect another just prior to showing symptoms, by screening for sick people (and avoiding sick people) you will minimize the chances of getting flu. Additionally, more frequent cleaning of public areas (as happened during SARS) and promoting personal hygene will reduce the instance of infection.

I have used this policy all of my adult life and I have not had the flu since 1975 (and I do not get flu jabs)...

Unfortunately, Macaler has a point, and a very good one indeed, which 'analysts' seem to have ignored.

''If the Avian Flu were to mutate.... (...)...''

... some would get sick. Some would die. Some would not die. Life would go on.

So? What was the question?
