Anybody wanna bet these guys were loaded up on Ambien that they "washed down" with booze? As always with such reporting, the reporting journalists failed to do their homework to actually investigate further details, but I'm willing to bet that is exactly what happened. - long-haul flight of 13 hours or more. - guys - uncontrollably "drunk", uninhibited. - and I equally bet that they will have little recollection of what happened. This is typical, sadly, VERY typical, as this is invariably the magic sauce when these kind of things happen - and despite Ambien being labeled to not mix with alcohol, you know how it is - most people treat these things more as suggestions, than anything else - after all, "common sense" of alcoholics always trumps science, doesn't it? Make it a rule - either take Ambien *or* drink until you drop. Do not combine. http://www.therecord.com/news/article/633165--drunken-rim-employees-force-plane-to-turn-around Drunken RIM employees force plane to turn around VANCOUVER – Research In Motion has suspended two employees whose drunken rowdiness landed them in jail after forcing an Air Canada flight to make an emergency detour to Vancouver this week. Forty-five-year-old George Campbell of Conestogo and 38-year-old Paul Alexander Wilson of Kitchener have been ordered to pay restitution totalling $71,757 after pleading guilty to mischief. The pair were apparently so intoxicated and belligerent on their packed Toronto to Beijing flight that the crew had to physically restrain them, according to the Richmond RCMP. One report, from a fellow passenger, said they had to be handcuffed to seats. The pilot decided to turn the plane around when it was north of Alaska, landing the plane in Vancouver at around 10:20 p.m. Monday. The BlackBerry maker wouldn’t say much about the incident. “Based on the limited information available at this time, RIM has suspended the individuals involved pending further investigation,” read a statement from Marissa Conway, of RIM’s public relations agency. Mounties arrested the men at the airport in Vancouver and placed them in jail overnight for a court appearance the next day. The other 312 passengers onboard were put up in hotels overnight and the flight resumed the next day, 18 hours behind schedule. “They were far too intoxicated and were just being unruly. The flight crew was asking them to smarten up, but they weren’t listening to anything they were being told,” said Cpl. Sherrdean Turley. Her RCMP detachment has had calls before about unruly passengers at the airport, but this case was particularly unusual, she said. “This incident kind of stands out, simply because the two passengers were actually restrained on the flight by the airline crew and by the fact the plane had to divert so far off its flight path,” Turley said. Both Campbell and Wilson pleaded guilty to one charge of mischief in Richmond Provincial Court. They were given suspended sentences and one year’s probation. The pair were also barred from having any contact with Air Canada crews or flying with that carrier during the probation period. Because the daily direct flight between Toronto and Beijing extends for 13 hours, any unscheduled stop would put the flight crew, which includes four pilots and 13 flight attendants, beyond the number of hours they are allowed to fly for health and safety reasons. The airline could not immediately get a flight crew to the Vancouver airport, so passengers were put up in a hotel overnight and then flew on to Beijing on Tuesday, arriving 18 hours late. The RCMP’s Turley praised the restitution order. “It’s really good. I can’t begin to imagine what this cost the company,” she said. Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick added the crew followed standard procedures to maintain the safety and security of passengers and the flight. “Safety and security are always paramount, so when the pilot feels that is compromised they will act,” he said. -with files from Canadian Press gmercer@therecord.com

Indeed, and a lot less bound to get you into trouble. Try convincing the usual alcoholics of that.
