First flu death By The Nation A-40-year-old woman in Bangkok has become the country's first fatality linked to the type-A (H1N1) influenza virus, a high-level health officer said Friday. "The Health Ministry's academic team is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and will release the results to the public," said Deputy Public Health Minister Manit Nopamornbodi. The ministry will Saturday hold a press conference on the investigation. Earlier on Friday, Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said 78 new cases of type-A (H1N10 influenza cases were registered Friday, adding the total cases in Thailand to 1,132. Of the new cases, 71 are students, he said. Of the accumulated cases, 1,110 patients have been cured and discharged from hospitals, he said, adding that 22 patients are still in hospitals.

Sounds scary reading that 1,132 cases of swine flu in Thailand -- most news source tend to 'forget' to mention the 1,110 cured and discharged cases - and the remaining 22 patients are probably just those who caught it recently, and will soon be discharged. As such, 1 fatality out of 1,132 is not only a very good rate, but is in fact doing better than regular flu... plus, we don't know the circumstances surrounding that woman's death -- in a wide majority of H1N1 related fatalities, the victims have usually had additional conditions that were exacerbated by, or that exacerbated the flu infection. Essentially, meaning that H1N1, as far as Thailand, is pretty harmless.

I went to Bumrungrad hospital yesterday afternoon and all the nurses, administrators and janitors wore face masks. The doctors didn't, but stayed holed up in their offices and let the nurses hold the front line. Anyone who looked shaky, immediately had their temperature taken........

Read this somewhere: "A few tens of thousand get swine influenza and all of a sudden everybody wants to use a face mask. There are millions with AIDS and people still do not want to use a condom. One makes you sick for a few days; the other kills you." BTW, Argentina for some reason is off the charts in terms of mortality. With about 3%, it has the highest mortality rate, even higher than Mexico which has about 1.3%

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 4 July 2009 :- Man, aged 30, becomes sixth H1N1 fatality - People warned to take extra care over holiday ============================================================== A 30-year-old man has been confirmed as Thailand's sixth A (H1N1) influenza fatality. The man developed flu symptoms on June 26 and sought medical treatment at a private hospital in Bangna district three days later with severe pneumonia. He died on Wednesday, said Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Prat Boonyawongwirote. The hospital did not report the infection to the ministry until after he died. A post-mortem conducted on Thursday found the man had A (H1N1) influenza. The man weighed 123kg, which put him in the high-risk group. Experts say obesity is one of the risk factors contributing to deaths among type A (H1N1) patients. Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai yesterday warned people to take extra care during the five-day holiday starting today. The flu could spread easily, so people should avoid crowded places if possible, he said. "Although the H1N1 strain of virus is not virulent, it moves around as quickly as a storm," said Prasert Thongcharoen, president of the Influenza Foundation Thailand. Most cases of infection and death were reported in crowded urban areas such as Bangkok and Chon Buri, where local flu transmission has been confirmed. A short-term epidemiological study on the new strain of virus also showed that students and young adults were the most vulnerable group. Dr Prasert says the mortality rate is still low and there is no sign of virus mutation so far. He recommended the Public Health Ministry beef up influenza surveillance and prevention at crowded places such as schools, military and prisons. He also suggested the government put on hold any plans to buy a thermal scanning machine to screen inbound passengers because the device had missed some people with influenza A (H1N1). The rising number of schoolchildren contracting the virus yesterday prompted several schools upcountry to close, with parents flocking to pick up their children. In Saraburi province, Saraburi Witthayakhom school has suspended classes until July 9 after two students tested positive for H1N1 and three students developed flu-like symptoms. The two students with flu picked it up after returning from tuition schools in Bangkok, while the three students with flu-like symptoms fell ill after they went to a weekend concert by the Korean boy band Dong Bang Shin Ki, at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani. In Kanchanaburi, parents were seen arriving at Chalermprakiart Somdej Phra Srinakharin school yesterday morning to pick up their children after almost 200 students caught flu and three students fell seriously ill.

I guess that with the current swine flu going around, this could be considered assault with a deadly weapon. NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Three people have been killed in religious rioting in southern India between Muslims and Hindus, police said Friday. Widespread violence broke out in Mysore Thursday after somebody threw a dead pig into the compound of an under-construction mosque, city police commissioner Sunil Agarwal told CNN. More than a dozen people were injured in the clashes, he said. Police fired tear gas and used bamboo sticks to break up the rioting, according to Agarwal. Authorities have, for now, banned assembly of five or more people on the streets of the troubled area, according to the police. Mysore is a city in Karnataka, India's only southern state governed by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
