Annoyingly this website is blocked to residents of Thailand.

Anyone been in and fancy cutting and pasting the basic story here.

Reports about Bumgrungrad are getting worse and worse these days, often it's hard to tell if the vocal one's are people with a gebuine bad experience or just making mischief. Certainly one of my work mates will never be going back.

First of all, our hearts go out to Mr. Goldberg and his family for the loss of their son.

I just finished scanning the site...

In addition to what LY shows, there is a lot of information, mainly in the form of emails and misc documentation (post-mortem) in which the father is trying to get clarity of what happened and why.

The father raises a number of serious issues with regards to the treatment, (im) proper application and mixing of drugs, cover-up, etc. He provides his emails with hospital executives and is trying to obtain as much information about the treatment action plus more...

Here is the Table of Contents:

It is worth the read..... and worth giving some serious thought.

I had to take my wife to the E/R a few weeks ago and (not because I am a doctor, just a pain in the ass), I am always watching and questioning doctors treatments, drug applications and whatnot. There are many drugs available here that are banned and/or not recommended in many other countries. In addition, many newer medications are often times not an option here so you see mix and match going on....

This is truly a sad case...one that has/will play itself out at every major hospital in every city in every country...not just BKK. This is a condition and condemnation of the general medical system and not meant to support B/G in any way....

yeah, the doctors are always subscribing anti-biotics for so many things

that worries me, because an anti-biotic given to the wrong person could result in their death

So true...and, in the case of my wife, the second thing they did after the saline drip was to hook up and drain a large bottle of wide spectrum anti-biotics into her system within minutes of being there. Over the course of the next 24 hours, they dumped 1 more plus large dosages of Celebrex (known to have negative cardiac issues in some) as part of their initial treatment plan.

We had a number of issues with this but mainly wanted to understand why they were going down this particular path. As with so many other things, getting useful information was like breaking into Fort Knox but they slowed down the drug regiment which was good (in our case).

It is a difficult situation as most of us (myself included) have, at best, marginal information thereby making informed decisions impossible. We put our trust in the profession..and while generally all goes well, there are too many stories with unhappy endings.

My first experience with a Thai doctor involved me feeling "run down" ( excessive drinking and partying " and to check a mark on my neck that was growing.
Solution "a" was a vitamin shot ( fair enough), plus anti-biotics ( what for?), he inspected my neck and said it was a rash from allergy?
On return to Australia I had the neck inspected, core sample taken, returned positive for cancer, 24 hours later a large peice of my skin was removed.
It's NOT just Thai doctors that err, had a tongue sore that seemed to last too long, visited doctor here in Aus, don't worry it will go away soon?
2 months later had my regular dental appointment, dentist said didn't like the look of that thing on my tongue, core sample taken and returned a positive for VERY agressive cancer, 1 week later 1/3rd of tongue removed. Surgeon said if another 3 months had passed before treatement and cancer had entered tongue muscle, BIG Troubles.

Doctors are human and I think at times we expect them to never make mistakes,, "to err is human".

Scary stuff. I have been going to Bumrungrad to proactively remove questionable skin lesions, as I had malignant melanoma years ago, and, at the time, the survival rate was only 3 in 10. The treatment back then was removal of a piece of skin about the size of a CD rom, and lots of underlying muscle, with lots of scars. I survived and went on to become the nefarious punter I am today, fortunately. When the TG's ask about the scars in the s/t rooms, I just say "ack-see-dent!", too hard to explain it.

One thing I like about Bumrungard, is they will do anything for a price. Like, "hey doc, ya think you can remove my hand and graft it to my forehead?" Well, maybe not that but they have been removing questionable skin lesions by laser and liquid nitrogen for a couple of years now. On my last visit in June, I had a biopsy done on one, because it was one I'd been watching for a long time and it suddenly took off, increased about 3 times in size in about a month. The biopsy came up positive for a fairly aggressive epithelial cancer, so they went back and removed a larger section (about the size and shape of an open eyeball) and sewed it up. The doc who did this told me he doesn't work fulltime there, as he is a teacher at Thammasat (I believe) and specializes in skin research. He did some gigs in Boston (Mass General) and the Bergman Institute in So Cal. He kenw his stuff, and did a good job with the stitches -- no real scar now, just a red line in my arm where the skin was pulled together. The second biopsy showed that they'd gotten it all.

I got copies of all the paperwork from the lab (I worked in a medical lab years ago so know some of the jargon). I'd say they did a good job on that procedure, but the fatality referenced in this thread is very troubling, and has made me more determined to understand all aspects of any future treatments I may have there.

Have been to Bumrungrad for check-ups quite a number of times and received treatment for a few maladies along the way. Beats Chinese hospitals hands down.

BUT, any hospital anywhere in the world can screw up.
No excuse for it anywhere. Do your homework, ask questions, then ask more questions. And then, just cross your figers.

Funny but in fact most guys know more about their cars and what is good for it mechanically than they do about their own bodies.

More complex? Sure. But more downside if you don't gain some knowledge.

Was at Bumrungrad again in August. Check-ups are like a factory now. But the specialists, as required, are still not too bad.

Sad for the party involved above but, again, it is happening somewhere, in some hospital, right now elsewhere in the world. Horrors.
