I will be in BKK for a few days at the end of the week and I am planning to have some scans done - first time I will be going to a hospital in BKK Based on posts in this forum, I decided on Samitivej Hospital on Suk. I was quoted the following prices: 1. Echocardiogram 5,700 Baht. 2. MRI shoulder 16,000 Baht 3. 64 Slice CT Angiogram, no price yet - needed more details from me. Would appreciate any recent experiences at Samitivej and feedback whether these prices seem reasonable. Also recommendations for any other hospitals with new equipment where they are reasonably efficient and where they speak English would be helpful. Thanks RCPSJ

Coronary CT angiogram would run about 22,500 THB at Bumrungrad. Price quote from 48 hours ago.

Thanks DD. I am in BKK now and when I contacted Samitivej to set an appointment, I found they they were not all that efficient or informative for a someone so completely unfamiliar with the system. I also contacted Bumrungrad, they were way more efficient and informative, and yes, they quoted the same - 22,500 Baht for the CT 64 slice coronary scan plus a 1000 fee to the cardiologist for a consultation. Samitivej quoted 25,000 Baht plus 1,000 for the cardiologist. I had the scan done this morning - it was a little more traumatic than I expected because they have to inject a contrasting dye before the scan. Overall, I found the whole process at Bumrungrad very friendly and efficient. Would recommend it.

Far less traumatic than having a catheter jabbed into your groin vein and poking around inside your heart muscle Yeah, I've decided to discuss it with my doctor in the USA (as my case is not critical), but may reconsider if I extend my trip by a few days. They didn't tell you about the need for the contrasting dye (feels warm, as it's radioactive) ? They probably gave you a beta blocker (pill) before the procedure to slow down your heartbeat? Overall, glad to hear about your positive experience - there's always some folks poo-poo'ing Bumrungrad, but overall I have yet to have a negative experience.

They told me that the dye would make me feel warm (and I'm thinking warm and fuzzy). Instead it was a pretty strange feeling - I kind of freaked on the first scan and my heart rate went so high that pictures were too blurry (I didn't get the beta blocker because my pulse was 60 before it all started). They did it again and this time I knew what to expect and it was fine. Funny thing, they didn't mention anything about the dye being radioactive - just warm!. I had no idea (although the sign on the door saying Nuclear Medicine should have given me a clue). Now I am thinking, Holy Shit, the two places that felt really warm were my chest and my balls - hope nothing drops off in the next few days! I didn't really need a CT scan - just that my family has a major history of heart disease and I thought I would get it checked. My doctor in San Jose, CA said that the 64 slice scan is only just being introduced in the US and I have no doubt it would be 5 times the cost (unless you have really excellent insurance).

My, my what a timely thread this is... Turns out I'm in need of an MRI of my tailbone and a good orthopedic doctor to interpret the results. Anyone want to name names be my guest...

I'm still considering it - seeing as how the cost is relatively cheap, and my hospital accepts Bumrungrad results. I've got nothing critical, and no history of heart disease or anything aside from old age in my family - they just freak out every time my stress test shows an inverted T-wave result, that they want to check my heart out - and I don't disagree. I just want to be careful about any invasive procedure, though the thought of getting pumped full of radioactive dye is kinda cool.

Got my results back today. The detail on the pictures are quite amazing - and they give you a CD to take home and watch. I got a clean bill of health - all arteries completely clear. All in all, I think its worth knowing.

Since I get most of my work done at Bumrungrad, I've had a few MRIs and CTs relating to a lower back injury. The last time I went to have an MRi w/ contrast they quoted me 17,000. I called Prachachuen Imaging Group (a well known "local" imaging lab) and I got the same procedure for 10,000. The machines at both places are the same (for this procedure) and for 7000 baht difference it was worth the trip. The only disadvantage is that when you get it all done at BH, the images are online so the docs can pull them on their screen rather than looking at film. But again, for 7000, f- em, they can look at the film
