I contacted Samitivej Srinakarin on Monday, the same day I received an email containing many details about there check-up packages which range from 1,000 Baht up to 13,000 Baht for a guy my age. I replied booking the 13K one and provided my desired date and time. On Tuesday I had an email confirmation back confirming everything was arranged and what I needed to do before and what I needed to bring with me. All in excellent freindly English. So far so good.

Despite my appointment request via Bumrungrads website last Thursday I have still received no reply from them ! Very poor service indeed.

My wife and I undergoing currently an IVF treatment at the Bangkok Hospital.
As only this one and the university hospital in Songkla are doing IVF treatments I ( my wife better ) don't have much choice.
I have only experience with the Bangkok Hospital Phuket and that one is very good but I don’t have any experience with Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok.
Until now it looks good but does anybody have more info about this hospital.
One thing sucks and that is the transport from the hospital as there not many taxi's coming to the hospital and in my opinion to many guinness bottles walking around in the hospital.

I will need a complete physical and some dental work and maybe some immunizations.

Can all of this be done on paperwork that is in english?

I am assuming they have a staff that speaks english.

Why don’t you guys try the hospital at which the King is being treated, surely His Majesty will choose the place where the best medical care is available?

That would be Sririraj, on the other side of the river in Thonburi. They have a great Forensics Museum too, heheh, though not for the faint-hearted or squeamish...

It's not a given that because His Majesty the King is treated there, that it is the best. For H.M the King, it is the best because he has his own personal doctors, and because of who he is, they will give him the best they can provide.

You are not H.M.the King, so your treatment at the same hospital can be a completely different experience.

To think differently would be the same as expecting my regular BGs to treat you the same as they treat me. It's just not going to happen....lolol.

It looks like Bum for me.
... you will do well to select Bumrungrad... agree with Q2's sister's opinion on Bumrungrad above... I've lived in 10 countries and seen the inside of more hospitals that I care to recount.

... Bumrungrad is a best-in-class facility for what you want... the first hospital in Asia to be certified by the JCI accreditation agency all US hospitals must pass to operate... Bumrungrad is where western standards of medicine (generally) meet Thai resort hospitality... you can have your butt-hole invaded by a fat-fingered proctologist for your prostate gland exam, and then go downstairs for a Starbucks hot latte and some jazz while your poor quivering sphincter recovers from the trauma, and you await the lab results and contemplate why God decided a prostate gland was really the way to go.

... unsure I would as reflexively choose Bumrungrad (or, any other Thai hospital for that matter) for anything seriously invasive (hip replacements, spinal work, organ transplants, penile enlargement, etc.), but I have enjoyed not just good, but excellent, experiences there over the last 10 years.

... take advantage of the "Select-a-Doctor" feature on their web site home page... very useful... I never allow the hospital to assign physicians, as you probably get selections from the whoever-is-not-in-demand-and-is-available rotation, rather than who is a hot doc.

... for example, I use the "Select-a-Doctor" feature to screen for physicians who are educated, trained, or practiced in the US, where I believe the best (and most expensive) medicine in the world is practiced... I obviously screen for doctors in the specialized fields in which I have need, and who are current, or relatively recently, AMA Board certified in that specialization... I select docs with 10-20 years of practice, rather than younger ones who might miss an important call, or older ones who might be lazy and no longer current... doctors who have practiced in any research capacity are always great choices (by nature, they continue their education lifelong).

... I've enjoyed very good results using these sieves to sort through their selection of available physicians... some of these guys are very good... former heads of entire departments in US hospitals, former professors at US medical schools.

... after the niceties, I ask them to take off their Thai hat, and put on their western hat when dealing with me... they 'get' that... the result is straight-forward medical advice, which they are prepared to openly discuss with me, rather than dictate to me, which is the conventional practice here (Thais are incapable of questioning a doctor, for cultural reasons).

... as D2 points out above, Thai medicine's notorious reputation for over-prescribing and over-treating is not just bad business, but bad medicine... it happens for several reasons, but maybe the most important reason is that doctors here are permitted to profit directly from the drugs they prescribe (unlike in the US, perhaps elsewhere)... so, naturally, they over-prescribe heavily, to a population of patients culturally incapable of simply asking "why this drug? or, do I really need this drug? or, are there less expensive generics? or, can I buy it from a pharmacy other than the one you own?"

... you will get a great medical work-up... it is not as thorough as the Executive Annual Physicals I used to get at Scripps Medical Clinic in La Jolla, CA, but for the money, it is very good... and, they have the technology and expertise to add on procedures that will get you to a Scripps Medical Clinic standard if you have areas of concern that are not included in their standard examination.

... I think you are going to like this... excepting, of course, the fat-fingered proctologist part... unless maybe you are into that sort of stuff... which is actually probably better conducted by Dr. Oil, who conveniently sets-up her office nightly down on Soi Cowboy.

For example, if the results of the HIV test take 10 days to get, I may have to get them after I leave Bangkok.

How can I do this? Leave instructions and a FEDEX envelope?

Any suggestions?

'A World of Care'

Dear Sirs,

I will return to Bangkok in February of 2011 and I would like to come to Bumrungrad Hospital for the Executive Health Screening Program at the Health Screening Center (11th floor of the hospital).

I was able to get the brochure for the Health Screening Center at the airport recently and I will detail what I will need and the questions I have.

In addition to the normal tests done on the "Executive" program (the program which seems to most fit my needs), I will also need the following:

CMP- Comprehensive (or Complete) Metabolic Panel
PSA- Prostrate Specific Antigen
Urinalysis
Blood type and Rh factor
HIV test
Flu shot for 2011
Maybe some immunizations, I will bring my shot records and the requirements for comparison on the day of my appointment.

My question is, how long will it take to get the results of all of these tests? (To include the tests done on the Executive portion.) The reason I ask is because I will need copies of all these test results and I am wondering if I will be able to get them from the hospital before I leave Bangkok. (I will be on a 2 week vacation trip to Bangkok.)

I realize some tests require a "wait period" for results and if I cannot get all of the results before I leave Bangkok, I will have to make other plans to have the results mailed to me or something like that.
(FEDEX ?, Thai postal mail ?)

Thank you for your reply.

Recent trip to Bangkok and I finally get to the Bumrungrad hospital for a full check up.

I unfortunately asked for a flu shot as well, I was sick for 5 days.

I stayed at the Town Lodge and went to Pattaya the day after the check up.

I was experiencing nausea, dizziness, headache and diarrhea and upper respiratory symptoms like pneumonia or something, nasty.

I have had flu shots before, quite a few in fact and never got real sick from one, so another first for me.

They were able to e-mail all results and all paperwork to me. I also got hard copy before I left the hospital.

The health screen package with add ons was 10500 Baht.

Consider the ladies' who'd have "entertained" you for Baht 10,500.
Consider the ladies you'd be missing for shortsightedly ignoring your health and dying.
