Big fat Obesity, THE western worlds GREATEST health problem.
When are these pacaderms going to be stopped from stenching out the bars? When will society protect its children from them ? When will the governement FINALLY make an outside area for their type.
When will I be able to book an aeroplane seat without being subjected to their smoke,, OOOPS stench, and unreasonable "share" of the seating. when will governments see the damage they are doing to society and ban them from bars, clubs AND make them sit outside of their homes, so as to not infect the children.
This obesity epidemic makes smoking look like a mere glitch.
Ban the Obese, ostracize them, hunt them down,, make rules for them to sit outside, keep them seperate, hate them, abuse them. they are evil.

When do we start on the skinny ones,, or the ones who like Apple juice,, or the ones with blonde hair.

You should send a suggestion to the airlines to levy a an excess weight surcharge, after all they do charge you for excess baggage, seems like a logical extension. Their extra weight simply means that the aircraft will need to burn up more fuel for the journey and hence cost the airlines more money.

But why stop at "excess weight", just charge all customers based on their weight.
If airlines would be charging by weight instead of passengers, then they would not know how many seats would be needed and they could dispense with seats completely and just throw people into the cabin like they do with stuff in the baggage compartment. Or maybe people would be put in cages like the pets are, and the airlines could stack the cages up in the cabin.
Anyway, the problem is not always obesity, but just people with broad shoulders. Many airlines will attempt to charge a passenger for two seats if their stomach protrudes past the armrest, but they don't enforce any such rules if a passenger's shoulder protrudes into the area occupied by the next seat.

Seriously, though, how do obese people affect your health, Mel? I can see the airline thing, but that's not health, is it?
(And I can see your point about choice, too - but the analogy with obesity doesn't really stand up, does it, since the obese don't affect YOUR health).

Why do you think they have started to be so strict about charging the excess baggage fees? ---- all the extra weight from us fat-ass farangs was killing them on fuel costs.
One of the companies I work with does some composite material work and last year they were working with an airline seat manufacturer on some new materials to make the seats. The re-work was suppose reduce the weight of the seats by several pounds. My question at that stage was – “Will this be enough to out pace the average weight gain of the passengers?”.
BTW – as I understand it most airlines have started to be such nit-pickers about the excess baggage because more and more of them are starting to carry various forms of cargo on each flight. Now many airlines have done this for some time, but by strictly enforcing the excess baggage fees they have found people are more careful about not exceeding the limit and therefore the airlines now tend to be able to fit more cargo on each passenger flight. Then again this could just be some conspiracy theory started by weight-watchers-anonymous to take the spotlight off us fat asses.

The weight of a plane is a serious consideration of the airlines. They make a fair amount of money on air cargo for each passenger flight, enough money to make a difference between profit and loss. The amount of cargo they carry often depends on the number of passengers on a flight.
One time I lived in a city where a major airline had its headquarters. I was on several flights were right before the flight left the gate, they announced the all non-rev (non-revenue) passengers (i.e., employees) were required to de-plane becasue the plane was overweight.
