key in +1...often people have the cheap toll numbers programmed into their phones and they do not work for SMS

"Another fine answer from the people who know"

JJ, You need the end user to see if they can even take SMS or send them to a Thai mobile. For instance mine cannot send to Thailand or receive from Thailand so I'm SOL.

International Number SMS - I will assume, *from* a Thai number.

- First, call your provider, and verify that you have 'International SMS' activated. In many cases, this is activated by default, but for example for Orange, you need to request it by calling their customer service (Thanks, Dr. Love for the original information regarding Orange).

To send the actual message, you will need to know the 'country code' of your destination, the city prefix, and (of course) the actual number.

Here's a list of international country dialing codes:

http://kropla.com/dialcode.htm

(Please note the '+' (plus sign) in front of all tehse numbers. The plus sign is an essential component of the number.

Now, armed with all of this, for the same of illustration, let us assume you are trying to send an sms to the number (212) 555-1212 in the United States. In this case 555-1212 is the actual number, and (212) is the city prefix,

Open up your phone's sms/txt sending screen, look up country code for the USA (+1), the city prefix (212), verify your destination number, and thus type in:

+1 212 5551212 (note the spaces are not necessary, I just added for style)

add the text you want to send, hit 'SEND' and your message should be arriving within seconds.

NOTE: You can activate a delivery confirmation on your phone for messages sent, in which case your phone would display a message when the sms was delivered to the recipient's phone (but not necessarily read yet).

You may encounter some slight confusion, in some countries, with the city/prefixes, as they are sometimes formatted with an extra '0' (zero) in front of the actual number.

Thus, Austrian cellphones have a prefix of (0664) or the capital city's prefix can sometimes be given as (01) or townships may be given as (02244). In that case, DROP the leading '0' (zero) as you compose the number.

Thus, using our original number, but assuming it is located on a mobile phone in Austria, were we are given: Country code: +43 and Mobile prefix (0664), you would compose the number on your mobile phone as:

+43 664 555-1212

I hope this helps.

DD has a nice description. As a former "Ma Bell" employee, however, I have to correct one thing.

212 in the given example is not a "city prefix". There is no such thing in the NANP (North American Numbering Plan) created by Bell Laboratories and used by the USA, Canada, parts of the Carribean and certain USA territories. 212 is a NPA, or Numbering Plan Area (commonly referred to as an area code).

One NPA may serve many cities. For example, the state of Nevada is served by only 2 NPAs - 775 and 702, even though there are many cities in Nevada. Or, one city may be served by many NPAs. Manhattan is served by 212, 646 and 917. Los Angeles is served by at least 8 NPAs.

The general format of a NANP phone number is:

NPA-NXX-xxxx
where:
NPA - Numbering Plan Area (or area code)
NXX - Central Office Exchange
xxxx - 4-digit number within the exchange

As far as I know- it ain't brain surgery. I use DTAC to call out of country quite often and assume the trick to SMS is the same as making calls.

Just dial: +009 /country code/ phone number

for calls to USA it goes +009/ 1 /area code/ phone number

And, if that fails, ask the source: DTAC Customer Service

There are some USA Carriers that are quite poor at reliably sending/receiving SMS to/from sepecific carriers in Thailand. So even if all the customer service people say it should work, don't count on it 100% until you've tested it thoroughly with your specific carrier combination.
