First a caviet....

This is a thread to discuss technical issues and fixes for MS Vista, not a thread to brag how much you like Mac (if you want to do that go to one of the many AAPL topics and discuss it with the Duck).

I will be asking BK to remove any non Vista related posts from this Topic.

Now my problem... My loyal HP laptop is now making some ugly noises and based on experience I suspect that it is getting ready to have a major heart-attack.

Whilst I could get it fixed I really need the higher RAM addressing of the new Core 2 Duo chips so I am considering a new laptop. The problem is that by the end of this month OEMs will not be permitted to sell laptops with XP, only Vista.

I have found a few laptops with XP still available directly from HP but I can not buy one because HP will not sell one to a non-US resident (even though I can buy the same model with Vista at Best Buy and take it back to Singapore with me).

So here are some of my issues:

1) I (as part of my work) need to be able to run Oracle Express 10g, Oracle Fusion, Sun JavaCaps, and Troux Metaverse. These currently are not certified on Vista. Has anyone any experience with running apps of this type on Vista?

2) If you are not into downloading/running entertainment apps on you machine which is better Vista Business or Vista Home Premium? I am concerned with the amount of RAM that Vista caches for video-based apps and I want to minimize the effect on my installed RAM.

3) Is anyone running 64-bit Vista and if so how are your 32-bit applications (especially Java based apps) running on them?

Them are my issues, if you have answers/suggestions or any other issues please post them...

My Toshiba has been giving me fits with Home Premium. Not really a RAM hog, just problems booting up..... Vista is a real disappointment, XP was far better.

CS, reading your post, I would say: Make an effort to find a laptop with XP (or install it yourself).

I use Vista on my private laptop, but would not dream about getting that on my development computer (Win XP, I have curiously enough both Oracle Express 10G and Sun CAPS installed for my current project).

Sorry, not very helpful post, I know.

Actually erikE I did that search.

The problem is that with the machines currently on the market one can not 'downgrade' to XP. According to the folks I talked to, some of the hardware on the newer machines do not have drivers in XP hence they will not run.

I am going to check with the local 'Geek Squad' however to verify that I am not being fed a line of crap...

Seems to be a common view of Vista.

Nice of you to help Duck, regrettably I can not read your response.

Update: After much searching of on-line stores I have located an appropriate machine which is preloaded with XP Pro.

Feature for feature it is a little more expensive than buying one of the newer machines with Vista but I did notice that most retailers have upped the price of new XP loaded machines by as much as 50% more than what they cost 6 months ago.

For those who are having problems with Vista I have found a wealth of information on how you can optimize your machine to run more efficiently. I was almost ready to step into Vista but there are too many problems with running applications that are not supported on that platform.

The good point is that when 64-bit applications mature a little I have a Core 2 Duo processor so I can upgrade my OS then.

So a little treat for you MS users, the following website has great information on how to optimize your systems:

Snakefoot

Just put your OS type in the search box and a link will be listed that lists the Services on your box and some recommendations on how to set them...

I have Vista business. My understanding from talking with a guy at the computer shop a month ago is that if Vista Business is installed and you have problems runnings your app's you can 'downgrade' your OS to XP for free. MS are obliged to do this. Once you are using XP you can't upgrade back to Vista

I've had only 1 or 2 problems...the main one posting in here. Old postings would automatically submit before I had a chance to write anything (they were being stored somewhere on the PC...weird). But I don't use any app's that are mission critical. If your app's haven't being Vista verified then stay well clear of this OS until such time they have

talking about Windows XP now Micro$oft has released SP3 after much teetering and already there are reports that it has caused havoc on hundreds of PCs, just hours after it was released as an automatic update. People complain about spontaneous PC reboots and system crashes after the service pack installs. Nice work Steve Ballmer!

I run Windows Vista Business Edition in my boot camp partition and it's painfully slow, bugs ridden an embarrassment of a OS, really. I've upgraded to SP1 and it immediately asked me to re-enter product key as it has spotted hardware change, crazy but true. It crashed my Parallel VM twice, this stupid OS takes so much of my time that could have been spent on more productive tasks.

Stick to Windows XP for the mo, the lesser of two evils.

I am currently running XP Media Edition (SP3) and have had absolutely no problems. In fact I have not noticed any significant changes in its operation.

Now installing the patch is an issue, I first picked it up on Automatic Updates but it did not load when I shut the machine down.

I then loaded it from the Windows Update site and it loaded fine. The issue is that this SP is a virtual reload of your XP OS. There is a wizard to run and you should make sure that you have set up a recovery point before allowing the update to run. The update took about 15 min to load all of the new DLLs.

Sarge,

For your problems with RAM and speed in Vista I would recommend that you optimize your OS by trimming some of the Windows Services that run in the background. This is a link to a reliable site to learn about and get recommendations on optimizing your Vista OS:

Vista Services

It might be helpful to disable the SuperFetch service also. However before you do so I would recommending googling some of the articles on SuperFetch and determining if this is a good way for you to go.

Biff,

Thanks for the info. I try to stay away from Dell these days. A few of my clients have had issues with the hardware and I am not too happy with the warranty service they provide. Once I had to fly back to Singapore from Manila because Dell could not provide warranty service in the Philippines...
