To the technorati in the forum, what is the easiest simple setup for your laptop to have access to broadband internet in different locations?

My idea is to have the laptop connect to Internet in different countries, in a similar way as you do with your GSM phone when you travel: you get to a country, change sim card and start using local services.

In the same manner, I would like to get to a country and without having to buy new hardware (except maybe the first time), connect to a local wireless broadband connection. Ok, I know, I will have to buy a prepaid card with some connecting instructions.

For instance, those USB modems that you can buy, for instance with AIS in Thailand, can you use them later in an another country with another service provider after just buying a prepaid card? If yes, how should one best proceed as to what to buy and install? (just like one would suggest a triband gsm unit, instead of CDMA, for the case of a phone).

If I am not making much sense, please let me know and I will try to explain myself better.

Let's assume you have thew following hardware:

- A laptop with wireless capability

You can connect to any wireless service where available without using a phone. These can be paid or free services.
If there is anything to change you'll do it in your network settings on your computer.

or

- A laptop with Bluetooth
- A mobile with GPRS/Edge capability and Bluetooth

You can connect to the service provider (mind that you have to set different parameters for every service provider no matter you're in Thailand or elsewhere).
Then use your phone to connect to your Bluetooth on laptop.

I know I can use my phone as modem with EDGE/GPRS but I am finding that a bit slow.

I am looking more for broadband 3G - prepaid (if that exists), with hardware (USB modem perhaps?) that can be used across locations and ISPs.

The easiest setup is to take your laptop to the local Starbucks.

Well, as this forum is about Thailand, unfortunately you're left out in the cold in Thailand if you think about 3G.

I think there is no answer to your question because there are locations in the world with 3G and without.

I am Using GPRS/Edge here in Thailand and is fast enough for web browsing.

Your best bet, as already explained, is to get a multi-standard, 3G capable, 'world' GSM mobile, and use it as a modem for your laptop.

I would prefer Nokia units for this purpose, but equally good ones are made by Sony Ericsson. Avoid Windows Mobile based units, as they are often slower in tethered mode.

I have, in the past, used this method to provide connectivity in Thailand, and it worked rather well. If you have a problem with speed (i.e. your complaint of being too slow), that that is less the method described, and more your hardware or configurations on your end.

Before iPhone, I used my Nokia N73 with AIS card, and EDGE/GPRS, and it was sufficiently fast for web browsing, and even remote administration work - then again, I used as a Mac as my laptop, and those are generally faster (my experience) in tethered situations, than Windows counterparts (though, as always, a well-configured Windows PC can be just as fast, just by default, they are not).

The other option is getting a 3G/EDGE/GPRS express card, and replacing the SIM by each country you travel to, but that's more work, and no benefit over the mobile phone solution.

Then I guess I am good to go already. I havenīt tried it in Thailand (using my Samsung i600 phone as modem - yes, it is windows mobile) though in another location I used it, I found it slow. Lets see if it was a matter of service there instead of hardware or configuration.

My line of thinking had been that perhaps I could get one of those USB antennas that would connect to the local ISP and all I would need is a local user id and password (which I could get from a prepaid card).... and this would work just the same way your laptop usually connects to a wireless network. Guess, that does not exist.

You guys are right. It is working well. I didnīt have to do anything new different from what I do at home. Works faster here than what I am used to.

I don't even know what you were just trying to explain -- or rather, where you feel you would be grabbing the signal from...? Your/An ISP does not readily broadcast wireless signals... What kind of USB antennas are you possibly talking about???

I believe he is talking about the USB Sticks that take a GSM Sim Card and allow your Laptop to work on a GSM Network or in some Countries you can buy an external wireless Card similar to the Vodaphone one show on my link.
