As DrLove correctly stated, the bios (basic input output system) is software known as microcode. It is the interface between the hardware and the operating system. Having a customized bios for each motherboard manufacturer allows the same version of an operating system (Windows, etc) to run on different computers.

The BIOS is hardware. How can it hose the BIOS?

Easy, if a program writes directly to the CMOS chip your machine boots from in the BIOS stage, then it can do whatever it wants. Some newer machines have an option that can prevent that, but with most older boards it's possible.

BIOS is most important during the system startup, initializing devices (i.e, keyboards, the clock, starting the cpu, etc). Once the main OS is loaded, it quite often will talk directly to the device (thought the device drivers).
A friend has a few older hard drives in a box, that the BIOS is refusing to see, but he can use them fine under linux, as the OS talkes directly to the hardware.

BlueDevil
little off subject on the last few replys lets have a bios thread...
ok im no expert but I know a bit would help a lot if I knew at what point the friends pc is failing, is the bios loading? is the os trying to load? have u tryed safe mode? do u know hoe to use safe mode? is the sky blue...?
if ur not even getting to the bios it prob aint ur hdd so look at other components mobo mem gfx card. its also worth checking to see if the power cord to ur hdd is securly connected if however the os is trying to load u need do none of this. the other sugestion of connecting another hdd is a good idea iv done that b4, but realy the best idea is to partition ur hdd so that no vital info is lost if u need to reformat keep all ur precious files on the D partition (only data on c will be lost). partitions are easy to do on a clean drive can de a little harder if a drive is pretty full tho (the c partition needs to be as big as the total data u have on the drive or u will loose files) I recomend partition majic for the task I quick google search will find it its free or dl it at ms homepage its with "tweek tools" or something like that. hope that helps
