Herbert, Given the level of interest in DTAC's EDGE service I would say it is a long way off. But Thailand doesnt work like that and certainly AIS plan a nationwide EDGE rollout by the end of 2005. For the geeks amongst us I thoroughly recommend this page for DTAC EDGE information. http://crushdepth.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=102

Based on my Experience, Speed of EDGE either AIS or DTAC, both of them are sucks now. I have already tuned up my Nokia 9500 and my previous Nokia 7200, but the speed still far from perfect. I feel so terrible with that. Still the fastest internet experience (not included adsl and wifi) is with my CDMA 2000 1x AirCard 555. I asked my friend who was build many GSM BTS System and CDMA System, and he said that even in Bangkok speed of EDGE system is below then speed GPRS in UK. The good point is now AIS give time based 1 baht for 1 minute GPRS/EDGE air time so you can try first before used their internet SIM Card promotion. But DTAC only have internet SIM Card but not have cheap price if you used from normal DTAC SIM Card. I was shock few months ago when suddenly my DTAC SIM got blocked because the bill of GPRS/EDGE already pass my promotion limit. They said if want used for internet better used special Internet SIM Card. For Pattaya ie Chonburi Province, Still far away from EDGE Technology. Even CDMA system in this province still used old switching technology, compare in Bangkok area that already used full packetized technology and signal repeater in many building. So have to wait another two years more I think.

Has AIS actually launched an EDGE network? You can pay Bt999 for unlimited EDGE/GPRS usuage with DTAC. I think the poor EDGE speed of DTAC in BKK is something to do with the mobilephone hardware. Browsing or email on a mobile phone is roughly the same using EDGE or GPRS but downloading files or video is much faster with EDGE. I dont know but maybe the aircard gets around the mobile phone restrictions.

Yeah, Can pay Bt999 for unlimited access but for which area, and in what time? As I am not stayed in BKK, it's useless then. Only in weekend go to BKK. AIS not yet released EDGE by officially. But some folks said that they on testing the EDGE network in some area. It is true or not only AIS now the truth. But in my experience, both GSM provider is sucks, even DTAC too much down in specific time like for example in the evening. I don't know in other area. I agree about AirCard. That's why I only invested the expensive AirCard for CDMA 2000 1X network only. Because it's much reliable and can used in my area. Well of course have more advantage in Bangkok which they can push the signal to maximum and the Internet Speed to optimum.
