IMO: I would think that for price and service Dell is the best. With all their rebates and free upgrades you can pick up a completely new technology system for just under 1K.

I've found that that ingeneral the hardware is not what boosts the price, but the software. Getting XP Pro and Office add close to $200 to the total. ANd if you decide to get 128 or 256K video card, that will also push the price up.

I would suggest if you live out side of asia that you buy your computer in your native country. This way you are guaranteed to have warrantee on your system, incase something goes wrong.

[What about fries. I've heard Americans are a bit partial to them, though you'd never know it to look at them.
According the some experts, they were invented in Belgium. But regardless of where they were invented, not too many people in the US eat fries made in France or Belgium. We make our own.

Difficult when you thought Asia would be better for IT and you only shop in Thailand. Malaysia and Singapore are priced better. Japan, Taiwan and Singapore have top quality, cutting edge IT.
Thailand is a great place for many things but it is not Asia's IT leader!!
However, there are some bargains to be had. These guys have few restrisctions on copying stuff. Software is good in BKK. Hardware parts are OK.
Try going to MBK to buy electronics. It is mostly copy gear, even the Sony Mp3 players I was looking at last week. Ask the cutie serving if it is copy and often they will tell you it is. Good copy canon dgital camera batteries there. Real one 2700 baht, copies 850!
A lot, but not all of tech is sold the same way in BKK.

Peronally, I don't care what they are called. French fries, French toast, etc, makes no diference to me. That is not the same as going to France or buying a French product imported into the US.

Tried to find out bargains in BKK, living in Phitsanulok. A look at http://www.bangkok-computers.com/products/products.php?type=USB+Drives left me surprised. Bought last week an APACER 1 GB USB stick for 3.5K, may be their prices are old...? But more than 3 times doen't sound reasonable to have a trip down south.

The small shops in Pantip are not all doom... I have purchased quite a few PCs from these shops and they have worked for years.
Agree with the Doctor. I bought a "no-name" custom desktop years ago, still works; only had to replace the hard drive after several years. Like the Dr says, specify what parts you want and check them. Download some of the benchmark programs from the net (i.e., verify cpu is what you specified, not overclocked), etc. The advantage of a "small" shop is that you might actually get better service if something goes wrong. Yes, you will have to return the computer to them, but, as they are "mom and pop", less bureaucracy to deal with them from a name brand. Think better deals to be had on peripherals in the US (e.g., Plextor dvd burner much cheaper in the US, like 60%).
