A)

Don't think so Shagga. A friend of mine was travelling (here) when his IBM laptop broke. He called them up & went to the repair facility up near BTS Phaya Thai. They asked him to come pick it up the next day. Whether he had to pay or not is a moot point. He was delighted to get his machine fixed so quickly. LY can fill you in on another giant multi-national - DELL - both of these companies will come to your premises for up to 3 years if you selected that option while purchasing. Why would an Apple authorized dealer stand behind products sold elsewhere? Cuz head office in Silicon Valley said it was ok & it will reimburse said dealer. Daffy can tell you all you want to know about Apple.

I can tell you of a friend of a friend of a friends second best sisters granddads uncles left balls pubic hair that could not change his Sony camera in the UK that was bought in Thailand.

I am sure that DELL, SONY, IBM and even APPLE do change and repair some goods with or without charge interesting point there, if they feel its in the best interest, GEES! I tip over the top if I feel its in my best interest. I was just using Apple as an eg. The company I worked for in the past, part of my job for them was setting and making these agreements with local distributors, e.g. what to take back, how much and when. Also what in there country will we do for them if it dose not work etc. I had some dealings in Thailand and the life time guarantee that we offered in the US did not stand in Thailand at all in fact on the lower no frills product in Thailand we did not even give a standard three month guarantee as such “keep it on the hush”. If you was smart what you could do was buy it here take off the wrapping then if it went wrong send it to the head office in the US and say you bought it at the Goods Guys or Best Buy and it dose not work can I have another one and they would do it. Then you have all the problems with post, your time and effort etc, not worth the 100bt saving to buy it here is it. In some countries we did stand by the customer and on some products we had an international guarantee but not on all and the less the better from the manufactures point of view as this gave more control over budgets and also helped with outer country legal matters to do with consumer acts and rights. Again this is not the norm.

Think of it this way
As you stated Sony etc have a type of selling consortium, what they do is if they see you selling at a price they deem not fit then the next shipping order they just forget to send you more stock, the manufactures term for this is
“the seller is pricing the goods in a manner that undermines the products stance”.
So buying it in Thailand or in the US or even in Japan makes no odds as the price is the same, so in that case he is going to be buying a lower end local maker this sends me back to my point, the question?
“where are you going to be using the DVD player” dose that company have a stance in the country where you are going to be using it to, do they have a regional guarantee agreement with the distributor. In this case if you are not going to buy Sony for eg as they are price setting you are going for a local brand, what’s the point in taking the risk for 100bt saving etc. As I said get the tax back a way for saving money you can do this on Sony, IBM, APPLE as long as the goods you buy have there international guarantee, you said buy it in Dubai as there is no duty swings and roundabouts my dear man. Over all do not buy here as a rule of thumb unless you really know what you are doing.

Of course it's hard to buy a region-locked player almost anywhere (except maybe the US). Certainly most players sold in the UK are region-free (according to an EU survey). Even if they are region-locked you can find out how to hack them (almost always by using the remote) on the Internet.

Do US players have this hard-coded? I doubt it.

Most if not all DVD players world wide if they are hard coded have a code that can be typed in vie the remote congtroll when the booting sequence takes place overrides the built in software for hard codeing.

No, if it's 'hard coded' you need a soldering iron to change it (i.e. you can't change it, or you'll need to replace a PROM, for example). If it's 'soft coded' you can change it using the remote (i.e. it's just a bit of code -- in this case sometimes referred to as 'firmware' -- that is accessable).

I like Soken - I have maybe 5 of their DVD players.

You might wonder what a sane person with a small / medium sized apartment does with 5 dvd players....

And than the 'maybe' part... Myself I think I have 5 Rolls Royces, but it could be 4 perhaps.
