Ok guys...thanks for the answers. I know it makes more sense to buy in USA. But one of my teenage daughters wants a phone and her mom wont allow. Dear old Dad wants to surprise her with one in the mail from BKK. So, bottom line....can buy a tri-band with no sim card here and she can go to Radioshack or someplace to get a SIM card............correct?????? Send via EMS and no problems with customs?? Thanks again.

Jumpin, Can get Tri-band and send. SIM cards readily available from any Mobile Provider. Should be no problem by mail with customs if you declare it and pay appropriate duties (If you do not declare it the FBI may end up knocking on your daughter's door -- suspicious electronics, bomb trigger, etc.) If you carry it in on your person however, I doubt anyone will question it. BTW: Are you a gas, gas, gas; or was Mick lying...

there are only a couple USA carriers that use SIM cards, T-mobile being one of them, but you still have to make sure that the phone uses USA frequancies, just because its tri-band does not mean its the correct bands. My German Nokia phone works in BKK after being unlocked, but my USA Nokia will not work in BKK or Europe as its the wrong freq. there are 2 GSM freqencies, let alone all the other usa ONLY set-ups (CDMA etc) buy her a phone in the states for the company she plans on having service on.......

Easy - order the phone and the service via the Web from T-Mobile.com. They will ship and deliver the phone wherever you specify.

All the questions about which of the four GSM frequencies (850/900/1800/1900) each county and company uses are answered here: http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml It is quite simple to make sure you have a phone that works wherever you want it based on this information. For example, if you have an unlocked dual-band 900/1800 phone, it will work with Orange, DTAC and AIS in Thailand, but it will not work with any carriers in USA. If you have an unlocked dual-band 900/1900 phone, it will work with AIS but not with Orange or DTAC in Thailand, and it will work with Vodaphone but not with TMobile in England. Just look at the charts.

Not entirely correct Cingular/ATT and Verizon are (they having the lion's share of the market), and I have had no trouble connecting anywhere that a person with a CDMA phone can. According to ATT their GSM coverage is as good or better than their CDMA coverage.
