A couple of months ago I started having problems with it. At first I thought it was just the battery not holding its charge as the damn thing just started cutting out all the time, but even after charging it all night and with the battery indicator still showing a full charge the thing just dies.
I contacted my local apple shop and their response was that 2 years is the max lifespan anyway and to buy another. Contacting Apple Europe wasn't much better, although they did offer to swap my iPod for a refurbished model at a charge of £110 including shipping (about a third of what I originally paid).
At the moment I'm undecided whether to take them up on their offer or just buy a different mp3 player, but if I go with the latter option it certainly won't be an apple next time.

Dam I have a 40g pod and I agree its excellent but the battery only lasts one day but I use it with phones in the car and at home. Nex time I would only get a 20gig as the searching hacks me off.

One reason you are seeing iPods everywhere is due to Podcasts. Not everyone is listening to music.
Podcasts are getting to be a very big growth phenomena. iTunes/Apple and now Yahoo are going into it in a big way.
News, discussions, audiobooks, even written material converted to mp3 format.
Do a Goog search and see for yourself if you are interested.

I've not got an iPod but I have an MPeye HS200 which is a 5Gb HD thingy. Great little beast with FM radio, line in, various music formats etc., even colour pics (gifs) and it's smaller than most iPods!

I use mine for music and as an external drive, super wee monster!

Cheerio
PS: Oh yes, a friend of mine bought an iPod Mini for her kid. It's ok but she wishes she had an MPeye!

Daffy,

I'd be interested in any info you have on changing the batteries yourself. As iPods are a sealed unit how'd you even get the sucker open without smashing it to pieces?

As for opting for Applecare to extend the warranty, I'd thought I was buying a quality product in the first place and to me that means more than an 18 month lifespan. Also, you've gotta remember that the level of support offered by Apple US and Apple Europe is vastly different. After 1.3 million iPod users mounted a successful class action about the deficiencies of the early release iPods in the US Apple got its act together....but only in the US, over here in the old world iPod support still sucks and costs big time.

Any info you can send on changing the battery though would not only be greatly appreciated but might also save me the trouble of kicking the crap out of Steve Jobs if our paths ever cross

Got a Ipod Nano 4gb the day it was released and love it. You have to get a skin for it or you will have many scratches before you know it. Had a creative Zen micro. It lasted till after the battery was charged and then the screen froze. Tried everything to reset it but could not. Returned it to creative labs for refund.

Nope. Never have, never will. Just happily using their products, and happily earning a living supporting them.

A warranty extension is just that - insurance to give you peace of mind, and to provide you with insurance against hassles and headaches. You do not NEED to purchase it, and as for me, none of my first three iPods ever needed it.

Nevertheless: You are purchasing a device with fine, mechanical, moving parts (the internal hard drive), and it's a device that you plan to carry with you a lot, and hence be exposed to lots of motion.

While I do not generally suggest warranty extensions for products, I do strongly recommend them for anything that will be moved a lot -- PowerBooks and iPods.. Considering the cost for AppleCare is just $59, and it's valid internationally, it's a very small price to pay, for peace of mind for the day after the original warranty (of any product) expires...

You don't have to -- but when you have it, and when you do need to use it, you're glad you have it.

Hope this helps.
