Next time were both there. Mind you I've taken the first step to settling down there and have rented a town house. Keep in touch

Quote: from breconion on 8:30 pm on Feb. 15, 2006 I know this may be of no use to you as you have to access the service to activate this. 1 - 2 call now has a service that for 30 baht a month you can keep your number as long as there is money in your account. All you have to do is activate the service either by txt or calling into any service center.
Anyone know the name of this service as it seems a better deal than topping up as I do not make that many calls. BB

Quote: from retiredintahoe on 3:20 am on Feb. 16, 2006 DD: Are you sure? My DTAC (GSM 1800) won't find a network in the USA, because the USA does not have GSM 1800. So, how can I recharge my DTAC SIM (even having picked up top up cards) ? If you happen to know of a way from the USA I would appreciate knowing about it.
As they do not have a top-up website you would have to use a tri-band moblie telephone if you are in North America. It would be simple to save your contact to your SIM and just move it between phones as you need...

CS: I have a quad-band in North America. My DTAC SIM does not work in the USA. No network signal at all because it is GSM 1800. So, could you please explain how I would "use a tri-band mobile telephone" to add minutes? I would appreciate it.

retiredintahoe, My DTAC card works in the US as I take the card, put it into my spare Tri-band (900/1800/1900) phone (the phone not the SIM card determines the band it works on), my tri-band searches for a signal on 900, 1800, and 1900 and registers on the appropriate band (1900). You need to have international roaming set up with DTAC and it will roam via a local provider (seems to be Cingular most of the time but T-Mobile pops up as the provider sometime). You now can call or txt your top-up card number to DTAC. DISCLAIMERS: 1. Some of the cheaper/older Tri-band phones require you to manually set the band. You cannot use a dual-band (1800/900) or single-band (900) phone. 2. A local provider must be providing GSM coverage in your area (some areas only have CDMA coverage). 3. Roaming rates and SMS are very expensive (USD 1.20 per minute talk and USD 0.50 per SMS). You must have sufficient credit in your account to cover the cost (there are no freecalls/free SMS).

CS: THANKS! That's the key - international roaming set up. Probably mentioned in other reports, but I missed it. I'll set this up (and buy some top-up cards) when I am in BKK next month. And, thanks for the disclaimer info. Easier for me to do it than give my SIM card to the TGF and have her remember to do it.

I did, and the information they sent back was pretty much, not really useful. It included their current GPRS and pro-rated SMS and MMS plans, but nothing about their current calling plans.

Please take note, that your DTAC or 1 2 Call sim must be active for at least 3 months before activating international roaming or international dialing (from BKK or elsewhere). They also need to see Thai ID or Work Permit to open them as well (though as I can not remember its either for one or the other) Beware though, in the USA when you receive SMS you have to pay, due to the fact that you are "international roaming"; its about 75 cents a SMS. This will prove troubling when you turn your phone on just to send out a SMS and then receive 5 missed calls SMSs and other annoying SMS from California Fitness or Major Cineplex SMSs.... it can quickly add up... on another note... if you have a Dprompt or 1 2 Call... wait 3+ months... then activate intl' roaming... then have the pleasure of changing to DMAX or GSM respectively you then have to wait another 3 months of activity to open international roaming again!!! ---- this happened to me
