The simple solution is to go to your internet settings & where it says "Remember visited pages for the last _ days" in the History tab, type in "0".
You should also make sure that the Autocomplete forms feature is disabled as well, so that "www.mrchewsasianbeaver.com" doesn't pop up in the URL bar when your wife is shopping for that new furcoat online. 
Of course, your wife can just as easily change these settings back to the default settings.
I use Firefox to browse, & everytime I exit out of the browser, a menu pops up that enables me to erase all the cache, history & saved forms before I quit the program.

Go to "Current user' => Software => "Microsoft" => Internet Explorer => Typed URLs => and delete away

Now, now, folks, remember you are dealing with wives around house. They are among the smartest people on earth. Forget that and you pay dearly. Just imagine a situation in which petrified PussyTraveller starts deleting everything from his browser from today. When Mrs.PT next uses the PC her forehead will immediately furrow as she wonders why the browser is suddenly looking clean. The same browser that till yesterday revealed all the shenanigans is now looking suspiciously clean. Hello?
Ergo her antenna is up and her snooping will not only increase but turn more insidious. No. no.no.
One simple subterfuge -- if you are as computer dumb as I am -- is to have 2 browsers one IE and another non-IE browser. Keep IE as your default browser for normal decent computer activity. Use the non-IE for your other activities. Delete from cache and history and url as indicated by others above. Wife doesn't even know you use an alternative browser. And even if she launched the other to inspect there's nothing on it. Enjoy.

I agree with that advice, have two browsers. Make IE the default, and use Firefox. Firefox has a feature where it will ask you to delete history, cache, passwords, etc. on exit, just in case you forget. It will also ask you this on startup, if you forgot to do it when closing Firefox. This is all configurable via the "Tools=>Options=>Privacy=>Settings.."
