Gents,

Spent some time researching companies in BKK that provide Microsoft, Cisco and IT security training in English. Compiled the results and listed my findings below.

Prices are comparable between the various BKK vendors offering the same IT course. However, prices are considerably cheaper in BKK than for same class offered State-side. Depending on which corner of the globe you live, could be a cost savings to travel to BKK for IT training.

Some vendors schedule classes in English, others will put together a special English-taught course if enough students are available/interested. Scheduled (public) classes are generally offered at published rate, special (private) classes can be 2-3 times the usual price, depending on class (Cisco, MS) and the number of students attending.

Any techie in-country or frequent LOS visitor have any experience with any of the vendors below? I'm close to registering for a class with the first company, ERT. Would like to get some feedback before I send them my tuition.

Cheers,

- B -

Really trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. My company provides funds for annual IT training to stay current in career field. Trying to maximize my annual allotment (cheaper courses = more training I can go to), and get to LOS as often as possible for fun during the after hours.

Hong Kong and Singapore are other options for inexpensive English-taught IT training, but I'd rather go to Thailand (for obvious reasons). ;-)

Cheers,

- B -

Mr Alan
Chances are that a class taught in English will be very difficult to understand by the average English speaking person (unless it happens to be taught by a farang).

Mr Alan - Most instructor-led IT training I've been to could have easily been done without the instructor, in fact most courses my company will pay for are online or through some other form of CBT at this point.

Besides, you can always read the English course material and complete the English tests and ignore whatever the speech-challenged instructor is babbling on about. It's not like the Indian instructors here in the states are any easier to understand than some Thai instrutor would be.

babaganoosh - Thanks for posting what you found. This might be a good idea for some company-paid fun. Hmm, might have to look into this. It would certainly take some serious explaining to travel some 8,000 miles just to get some generic cetification, but it's possibly worth the effort if it can get the company to cover some of my expenses.

Still, I'm somewhat doubtful about what most certifications actually do for you in the long run. You either really know your shit or you know somebody high up, and nothing else will get you a good job on demand except for random luck, and that's nothing to depend on.

Uhmmm... Okay guys, maybe I wasn't totally clear in my original post. Some of the replies are kinda tap-dancing around the topic and missing the main point. I'll recap to try and keep this thread on-point:

1) BOONDOGGLE: I am a techie. I want to go to BKK. My company gives us money for training every year. It is "highly recommended" by management that us techies use this money and go to training. "Highly recommended" where I work means "REQUIRED" unofficially. As such, I am mapping out a training plan for this year. More importantly, I'm trying to figure out how I can economize/maximize my training budget AND go to BKK. True be told, getting anything out a 5-day Microsoft class offered in BKK is secondary to my primary goal of actually getting over there (on company's dime) and f_cking some TGs once class is done for the day. This ulterior motive type of travel planning is also known as a "boondoogle".

Are we all on the same page at this point? Good, let's continue.

2) CERTIFICATIONS: A non-issue, not sure why the topic even came up in the thread.

3) INSTRUCTOR LANGUAGE SKILLS: Not overly concerned how well an instructor can speak English. Obviously, I need to tell my boss I am attending an English-taught Cisco course to have any chance in hell of him signing-off on an overseas training request. As long as the training material and the gear I'm getting trained on is in English, the instructor can sound like Queen Elizabeth, Sly Stallone, Cyndi Lauper, Emeril Lagasse, Tarbash the Egytian Magician, or f_cking Chewbacca or R2D2 for all I care. I'll ask another attendee WTF is going on during the breaks if I get lost in translation.

4) ON-LINE TRAINING / CBTs: These completely defeat the purpose of the training boondoggle. Not sure why they were brought up either.

5) COST ANALYSIS: Think outside the box here gang. Yeah, the cheapest available training may be in your hometown or online. But, that doesn't fit or support our boondoggle planning model, now does it? No, what we want to do is highlight how inexpensive technical training courses are in BKK. We then find the cheapest airfare and cheapest hotel (s) in BKK and compare those cumulative costs to 'carefully selected, higher-than-average' training costs from providers on the other side of town or in the next state. We present the training plan, overseas training vendor research and cost analysis to the boss.

Desired result: Traveling 8K+ miles to BKK is actually the lowest cost option, or at minimum, the same cost as taking a class in town, and the boss buys off on it.

There are lies, damn lies, and then there's statistics.

6) FEEDBACK: Having found near a dozen training providers in BKK, (1) I want to share the research I did on these places with the forum, and (2) ask the forum techies out there if they have any knowledge or experience with any of these vendors. From my communications with most of these places, they seem reputable at face value. Just want to get feedback if any are really lousy or NOT reputable whatsoever.

... We now return you to the interrupted program already in progress.

Cheers,

- B -

2) IT CERTIFICATIONS: A non-issue, not sure why the topic even came up in the thread.

Well if you need the piece of paper and that's all, then fair enough, do the course. And it would appear from what you've said that your employer requires you to have 'the piece of paper', i.e. the 'certification' -- some sort of proof you're 'keeping current'. Otherwise you could just take the money and lie to them. That's why it came up. Depending on what sort of 'IT guy' you are, you probably realise that these courses are pretty much a waste of time for people actually working in the field (I speak as someone with a little experience). You'll probably know more than the instructor -- not so much a case of 'those that can, do, those that can't, teach', more a case of (particularly with MS) just not very good courses.

My (limited) experiences with IT support people in Thailand have not been favourable and they've done the courses and got good jobs.

Your boss would have to be pretty stupid to not know what you are up to. I am not sure what country you are from (UK?), but no one would get away with this in the (politically correct) US, unless the company was small and privately held and had no women working there.

i think babaganoosh is just trying to be helpful. Use the info or not "up to you"

Sounds like if you do not spend the money for training that you lose it. My company pays for one week of training a year, and it does not carry-over to the next year. Most training I ever went to is complete BS anyways. I wish my company would pay for training in LOS...... I work in the Nuclear field and hope to have a nice radioactive cleanup job in LOS some day.

I work for a VERY large US company. I live in Japan and get to attend courses in Asia (as long as in English).
I went to Malaysia last year for 5 weeks on company money. It was great.
BKK has VERY little in way of company sponsored (authorized) training in English.
Malaysia is very good and has quite a bit. Also almost as cheap as BKK (courses).
I usually fly to BKK and then on to Malaysia (comopany $$) as it's cheaper than flying directly from Japan.
