There are some USA Carriers that are quite poor at reliably sending/receiving SMS to/from sepecific carriers in Thailand. So even if all the customer service people say it should work, don't count on it 100% until you've tested it thoroughly with your specific carrier combination.

Just a data point. I have Cingular in the USA and my TGF has 1-2 Call. I have gotten every SMS she has sent me (with one exception), and she has received every SMS I have sent her from the USA.

for calls to USA it goes +009/ 1 /area code/ phone number

This format does NOT work for sms - see my earlier message about the proper format.

As an additional data point, I have T-Mobile in the USA, and most of my communications are with 1-2-call users - works just fine.

Orange, as described in my message, was the only issue, and it was solved with some aid from the Doc.

You guys have any tech tip on this ?

Since middle of last week my sms messages do not reach Thailand anymore. I am in Europe. I can still receive sms without any problem sent from a phone in Thailand !

So my TG changed SIM card and now a has new phone number of course. I can call her on this new number without problem. But no sms gets to her.

I changed SIM card and phone today and tried again. Still none sms from me can be received by her.

As a last resort I sent a sms to a random number like +6612345678. Oila, "message delivered" my phone claims ! If I sms her I get "message not delivered".

She is on AIS and I am on Vodafone. I read in the Bangkok Post that TOT or AIS is doing some infrastructure work due to lack of capacity. Could that cause sms failures over multiple days ? No, because sms service has nothing to do with live calls. Is it the king celebrations then ?

Clueless.

I was fooling around with Skype's SMS (beta), and when I sent to my DTAC number it received it almost immediately but the AIS number received the SMS only after a few hours.

Thanks BK, I just checked Skype sms website.

sms cost a bargain 0.10 - 0.12 Euro cents internationally.

I'll try it and let the forum know if my sms get to Thailand with Skype.
Just wait a few days for results ok ?

Skype 2.5 SMS beta is available on Windows only.
My craptop is running under Linux.
So I cannot test it.

On the other hand I have a dual boot option. I could start XP, but don't want to right now.

I am pretty sure it is not the way I send sms to Thailand is the problem. My TGF borrowed a phone from a friend and that received my sms just fine. It is something on her end. I already regret I bought her the Nokia 3250 which you can see in Thai TV ads all day. It is a big and expensive phone, just how Thai like it. But if something does not work you have to be a PhD to fix it.

For AIS (1-2-call) users, there is another alternative to consider.

If you are AIS (1-2-call) your phone can receive SMS when roaming in your home country. So if you have a spare, cheap phone, you could throw the 1-2-call SIM chip in the phone and leave it turned on in a desk drawer when you are in your own country, then you will receive SMS sent to your Thai number. Turn the ringer off so you don't hear incoming phone calls (which are VERY expensive to receive, and always come at a time you do not want to receive them). You have to enable international roaming with AIS before leaving Thailand.

1-2-call numbers, while roaming, can usually NOT send SMS. However, there are two options for that:

1. Get an account on http://www.mobilelife.co.th and then you can send SMS and the SMS will come from your Thai number. And current pricing for sending SMS via this website is 1 baht!

2. Get an account on http://sms.thaivisa.com and register your Thai mobile. Then, SMS you send from there will come from your Thai number. This is not just for AIS, but OK for DTAC. True, etc.)

I do not know the SMS capabilities while roaming with DTAC or Orange.

Hi ColoradoGuy,

first I would like to share my sympathy with you because you accurately described this very Thai imigration lady as really beatifull. This was in one of your forum posts, remember ? It seems ages ago, but the first time I vistited Thailand I was lucky to be in her line. Memories...

Regarding the SMS problem. I gave up ! None of my SMS that I sent from a European cell phone account make it to my friend in Thailand. Although much more expensive than SMS I now decided to just call her. Calling her works fine, but SMS service stopped working middle of last week.

I send a lot of sms messages and they need to originate from different mobile numbers.

ipipi.com allows you to prepay 50 or more sms. The neat thing is that you can register a number of mobile numbers with your account. Then when you send an sms you can specify what mobile number it is to come from.

This may or may not work with AIS. I was experimenting on my DTAC number. When I activated the call barring for incoming calls, instead of blocking incoming calls, it blocked out incoming SMSs.
