Congrats Doc,

You have graduated from periods to abbreviations. Do you think you might be able to make it to sentences by the end of the month ...

I have a question about the 1-2 prepaid SIM card. I got one two months ago with 200bt, then I was gone and now that I come back to thailand it seems to have stopped working. The people at one of the mobile shops tell me that I need to top it up every month otherwise it expires and I lose my number. This kind of sucks since every time I leave Thailand for a month I need to get a new number and it is useless as far as people being able to reach me. I tried to get a permanent mobile, but it seems that you need a work permit for that, go figure. Any ideas on how to get around that from Thailand veterans?

voyager,

I don't know about 1-2-call. With DTAC you can get the SIMPLE plan. I think there is a one-time charge of 50bt, but your number is now good for 1 year. Also, DTAC has a web site where you can register your phone (have to be in Thailand to do this) and then you can top up over the Internet as long as you have a topup card. Each time you top up your number (and remaining baht) are good for 1 year from the last top up date.

I would guess that 1-2-call has a similar plan.

Top it up more than once - as it stands, with AIS cards, every time you top it up, it adds a longer expiration date. Hence, if you add 300 Baht, you get 30 days; if you add 500 baht, you get 50 days (I don't know the exact dates, this is just for illustration).

If you know how long you will be gone, top it up with enough Baht to last beyond your return date, and you will be fine. You can also leave some money with a friend, and ask them to top up the card before it expires - alternatively, you can PM me, and I can remotely top up your card, if you Paypal me the amount you want topped up.

If you know you come back within 2 months or so, just adding 800 or 1500 baht to it should do the trick - or just buy a bunch of top up cards, and top up the SIM from abroad (though make sure to turn on international roaming before you leave Thailand).

I recall once topping up a new SIM card with 1,500 B and I got it working for 1 year. Normally every 300 B gives you an additional month.

I could be mistaken but I think the minimum amount that will move the date is 300 baht as well.

I don't think it will move on anything less.

YMMV.

I'm on a plan that CG suggested a year ago. No longer available but I get 1-year validity on a 50 baht top up. No way I'm changing plans. Just added 50 baht last night and good until 15/02/2009. Now if my wife would just quit talking to EPC's wife I should do just fine with 50 baht for several days.

Bear in mind, once you used your SIM card sufficiently to advance the expiry date by a year, you are pretty much good and don't need to worry. Mine's set to expire in January of '09, regardless of what's currently on it.

So, the best advice is probably just to top it up with top-ups over 500 Baht (or more) and check your expiry date until it's far enough in the future. You can also check with customers service at 1175.

Thanks everyone. I did not know that simply throwing more $$$ into the card would mostly take care of the problem. Still for a long term visitor/resident here a permanent number would be preferable. Apparently many Thais choose to use the prepaid service as well, but given they are using all the time lapsing would not be a problem. I wonder if there is some way to retrive a number that has lapsed accidentally. Imagine you are a local and you must notify 1000 people after you let your number lapsed accidentally. That would suck.
