No Biff, no need to insert sim card.

Actually, what I had in mind was something like this (Franklin Wireless' CDU-680 USB wireless broadband modem) - I just found it does exists, so I was not that far from it... though I guess I won´t need it as the other soultion mentioned is working (I am sending this from a taxi, using my mobile phone as modem) :

EVDO would be the patently wrong technology to use for the sake of having a traveling/mobile solution that works worldwide - mind you, the Franklin CDU-680 is a great little device (I have one in a router, in my car to provide mobile connectivity), and while EVDO is a great technology to provide this kind of access, you are screwed when traveling -- most EVDO devices do not accept SIM cards (the Franklin CDU-680 does not), and the chance of getting a local EVDO provider (however few there are) to agree to register your device on their network is usually small to nil - this is exacerbated by there being two EVDO providers in Thailand (CAT and Hutch) with coverage areas that do not overlap - i.e. you can use CAT in Udonthani, but not Bangkok, and vice versa.

Hence, not sure why you are eyeing that specific technology and device, seeing as how it stands diametrically opposed to your originally stated requirements.

Because I thought it was easier and simpler (i.e. more versatile) than what you say it is.

The intention being to land anywhere buy a prepaid card and just get going. Just the same way your old dial-up modem in a laptop used to work (10 years ago). You would dial a local number and with a local prepaid card with user id and password you would be up and running. That was cumbersome then, but worked.

I was thinking something similar along those lines, but with wireless broadband.... buying a prepaid card -the type you scratch to reveal the user id and password (without needing a phone and a local sim card) and you would then connect wireless to a local ISP.

Looks like the only way to go is to use the phone as modem with a local sim card.

BTW, I do not care for the name of the technology, be it EDVO, WIMAX, HSDPA... whatever... just one that would works the easiest in different locations when traveling... like gsm does for mobile telephony.

You should, because it determines what will work, and what won't...

Then go with the GSM equivalent -- pick up an UNLOCKED 'Option GT Max' card in either PC Card or Express Card flavors (Express card would be suggested). The cards come in 3.6 or 7.2 flavors (3.6 is software upgradeable to 7.2), and can be purchased on eBay for around $100.

Be sure it is an unlocked card!

These cards will accept data, or regular SIM cards - and you can do what you explained you wanted to do. DTAC is your best bet, as they have an unlimited EDGE plan, as well as the option to recharge and top up just your data portion of the SIM. While the GT Max will support up to HSDPA or HSUPA, in Thailand you will be stuck with EDGE.

The good news is that virtually all GSM providers have some sort of data plans, and that the future of 3G in Thailand (and even 4G) tends to support the GSM based standard -- even CAT and Hutch have agreed to switch to LTE for 4G (which is the GSM based standard). The GT Max will be able to operate on that standard as well (at the, then, slower 3.6 or 7.2 speeds).

The old school concept method you outlined still works, but you need to use the right technology, in which case it DOES matter to care about the names of the technologies involves

GSM does not work everywhere. For example, Japan.

also South Korea
http://www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/582422-1.html

There are some other places where GSM is not deployed. One place you can look is here:
http://www.calibryze.com/gsm_countries.html

And, as Daffy says, you should care what technology is used, since it may determine speed, QOS, and even how long it will be supported. As well as price.

Retiredintahoe, trying to do as I usually do being a bit of a smartass? Question to you: which mobile technology works across MORE (not ALL) countries than any other technology? (it is a rhetorical question).

Funny, you suggest me to look at howardforums.com.... look at past mentions in bkktonite of howardforums.com, here is one from 2002: http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=29&topic=63

As to the the cat.... as long as it catches mice, I still do not care about its color.... again an analogy to try to explain what I intended to convey regarding the naming of the technology (no preference per se for one or another at this moment, and that is why I am asking).

GSM, that particular protocol, does not - but 3G, based on that same standard, does -- as long as your device is Quad band *3G* (witness the iPhone 3G working just fine in Japan).

I am not techie minded so apologies if the anwer to my questions are already given above. I could not work out if it they were or not.

*Do the USB sticks that Biff mentioned work Ok in Thailand?

*Can you buy the USB sticks in Thailand, then plug them into your laptop and surf the net, log onto BTF, etc in Thailand while on holiday using them on a pay as you go basis (paying the local Thai rates) ?

*Presumably if the USB sticks are available in LOS then you will have internet access with them wherever there is a signal (e.g. I can use the mobile phone up in the village, as there is a signal there, so would also be able to use a Thai USB stick for the laptop in the village). Is that right?

Thanks.

Yes, you need to combine them with an appropriate SIM card, and plan, from a preferred provider.

DTAC has decent unlimited rates (i.e. month unlimited access for a flat rate) ;

AIS has decent unlimited rates (i.e. month unlimited access for a flat rate) ;
