It may be because your DVDs and player are from different regions.
Most (read: 99%) of DVDs sold are 'All Region' disks, programmed to not care about the DVD player's region. I think in three trips, I only ever picked up ONE disk that was region coded, from the bootlegs (Thai 'real' DVDs are Region-3 encoded, if they are even region-coded at all)
