I think think leaving ORANGE out is a significant omission; http://www.orange.co.th/english/join/just1bt.htm

I did not mention ORANGE only for 2 reasons - Forst, if you look at their website, you find in no word explained if their just talk plan is a preaid or postpaid plan. Second, I had the pleassure to try a SIM of orange from a friend at work, it was no pleassure at all. Maybe that has changed in the meantime.

6 baht/minute for International Calls from 1-2-call phones.

Through the end of the year 2004, AIS is running a promotion on International Calls. Calls to many countries including Amereka, Canada, China, Australia and most of the "real" European countries are 6 baht per minute + tax. But to take advantage of these rates, you have to dial 009-countrycode-number. So a call would be dialed:

USA: 009-1-areacode-number
England: 009-44-number

I used 009 last trip from my 1-2-call phone, quality is perfect, no delay. It is like the person is next door, not the other side of the world.

You can get full details by sending email to AIS Call Center - or calling them:

email: callcenter@ais.co.th
phone: 0-2271-9000

009 is the eFONE service from CAT (all international calls are habdled by CAT - that's why you always get 2 bills - one for domestic and one for interntaional calls - at least that is still teh case if you use TOT, TT&T, TA, AIS or DTAC, don't know about orange or hutch but I guess it is still not possible for any of them to offer their own international calls) - the new rates are a promotion - by the way, they use VoIP, that's also the reason why they could reduce the rates that much.

I use eFONE at home (you can use it with any fixed line as well, for details see: http://www.cattelecom.com

It is quite clear what is postpaid and prepaid on the Orange site; http://www.orange.co.th/english/index.jsp

There is a Just Talk icon towards the right hand corner that contains the text, 'Pay as you go'.

Also it's not correct that all international calls are handled by CAT. You can route international calls via TOT by using the prefix 008. Of course, there are no bills, seperate or otherwise, with PrePay.

Shouldn't that be: 'Pay before you go'?

True, no bill with a prepaid service, but you might have followed the ongoing battle between TOT and CAT about TOT offering international calls - so far CAT's complains at the courts have been confirmed as they are the only operate legally offering international calls.

So legally, there is only one operator in thailand for international calls and that is CAT

for more info check their site ( sad english for such a big company though)

Have you actually bothered to try using the 008 prefix?

Nope, I have not, why should I? If you like to use it fine, I just pointed to the current monopol on international calls by CAT - no mather what TOT is currently offering. Why? DO I have to try it in order to post here?

Do you think one can stay current on all information in Bangkok? From the way you talk you are living in LOS for a while, then you shoud well remember that all international calls where made through CAT and you always got 2 Bills, one from the local phone company (Like TA) and one from CAT in case of international charges. Even NOW - if you get a mobile phone from AIS - you need to have international calls activated and will get your bill from CAT.

Ok, maybe TOT is offering their own international calls (you might have followed the legal batlle in the thai press so I am not sure if they do not just use the CAT VoIP system now under an agreement), since I am no TOT customer that slipped my attention - so what? Can happen right?
