Anyone knows here how to configure Mac to connect with True DSL network? I did downloaded and installed driver fro Zyxel, and it shows status ok, but when I try to connect it is an error that say "Cant find PPoE server".
Any suggestions?

I take it, the zyxel is the USB modem you get from true? For a Mac user I would recommend to go to phantip and getting a belkin DSL modem/router. It will take care of estabishing the DSL connection for you and present it to the mac as a Lan connection. If you have Wireless capability, get the wireless modem/router/wifi access point and everything is sweet.

That's what I'm using.

The belkin gear is available at IT city at phantip (top floor).

Cheers,
TT

All I can suggest is the apple site, they may have a "Howto" for USB DSL modems or to try a different driver/client.

A friend had problems recently with his PC and ADSL and I changed the client for him, then everything worked.

Oh, before I forget, you need two parts.. the DSL modem driver for the Zyxel and a DLS PPPoE client.

Sorry can't help more, but haven't worked on Mac's for a long time.

Get rid of the USB modem, as suggested.

Going with an ethernet based DSL modem, preferably with integrated multi-port hub, and even wireless built-in is the far better solution.

First of all, Zyxel claims they have no intention of supporting OS X with a driver:

http://www.zyxel.com/support/knowledgebase1.php?indexFlagvalue=1021693380&level=3&upFlag=1021681602

The time you spend pursuing a non-existent solution will most likely cost more (depending on your time's worth), than going out and spending a bit of money ona solution that works.

In addition, the router solution will maintain the connection for you, while the drivers of most USB systems still require you to establish a connection ('dialing', if you will), which is a hassle...

My best experiences have been with LinkSys - I believe they have a DSL/router solution for your region.

I am sooooo close to giving in and buying a Mac for the first time in nearly 15 years. My first Mac was the original classic (remember those), but I have to say I am being seduced by the sheer beauty of the new G5 Imac.

Has anyone used one yet?

A piece of information: I was in the Apple Centre in Siam Discovery at the weekend and see that the Powerbook prices have been cut by around 10-12000 baht. The model I'm flirting with - 15inch screen combodrive - has been reduced from around 79000 to 69000.

Presumably that means the G5 Powerbook is not too far away.

I've used the PowerMac G4s and also the iMacs, also have repaired them

sweet thing about the G3 and up is that they use PC parts, i.e. video card, ram, etc. is PC spec., so easier to find spares or upgrade

and the G4s would kick the crap out of the best PC back then, and came default with a flat screen

PowerBooks, well they've always kicked ass and will last virtually forever, like the IBM ThinkPad, only better

I could go on and on, but I'll leave it to Daffy

note : I mean PowerMacs when I say the parts are PC compatible, not iMac or PowerBook

Well, technically, respective parts are also PC compatible in the PowerBooks and iMacs - you can upgrade the internal drives, CD/DVD, RAM, etc... using PC parts - just the actual getting inside are a pain in those models.

Regarding the iMac G5, Scobie, you allowed youself to be seduced by what is undoubtedly Apple's best and best-priced desktop - both in terms of performance, and style.

I have set them up for a variety of my clients, and everyone is extremely satisfied with their purchase. Clearly, the 20" model is the flagship, and it's really what you should set your eyes on... though the 17" model is also not too shabby (the 20" screen is just so darn perfect).

One suggestion, and this applies to any Mac you'd purchase (including the PowerBooks), go the extra mile and expand the internal memory on it to ABOVE 512mb - best is to get a single 1gb SIMM, and bring your system up to 1.25gb. Mac OS X will thank you with MUCH better performance.

In terms of PowerBooks - your timing is perfect, as Apple just released speed-bumped new versions, that do much more than just be a tad bit faster -- their screens are up to 10x brighter, as is the backlight on the keyboard. The 15" combo/Superdrive model is a good choice (in fact, same as I have in 1.25GHz version).

One thing to consider - you *must* get yourself a protective sleeve for you PowerBook, as the aluminium material scratches easily, and when that happens, you will be in pain... iBooks are a bit sturdier in that regard.

Apart from that, same considerations about memory apply - get an EXTRA gigabyte of RAM. It's worth the expense

Also, if you can, get the model with the internal 5400 rpm drive - the higher end models have Seagate Momentus drives, that not only have 5400rpm, but also 8mb of internal cache RAM -- which makes not just the drive fly, but OS X will experience about a 30% improvement in performance. I just upgraded my former 4200 rpm drive to one of these 100gb Momentus monsters, and my systems ended up being noticeably and significantly faster by JUST that upgrade.

Just decide if you need a portable Mac - otherwise, the iMac G5 is a fine choice, if not the perfect choice.

Ok, now I got a headache

I WAS flirting with the powerbook, but - to be honest - I get a boner just looking at the G5 imac that I'd happily give up the portability for the sheer damn beauty of the thing.

I mean, let's face it. Who cares how it performs as long as it looks good.

(are we will talking about computers?)
