Look at the problems Nokia have had with their Nseries smartphones. The iPhone incorporates every conceivable gadget that you could think of putting in a phone, uses the "most sophisticated operating system in the world" (i.e. completely untested in mobile phones) and is the first phone that Apple have ever made. I seriously doubt whether it will deliver the goods.
So, I wonder where Abrak's original opinion on the iPhone now stands?

How to activate your iPhone and get it to work with a Cingular SIM in 19 steps...

Only USA ATT and Cingular SIMs work with this hack. Even pre-paid SIMS from 7-11 should work.

Well Daffy....

The jury is still out big time on your toy...

Look by Apple's own (presumably conservative) estimates they aim to sell 1m Iphones this quarter. Big deal... that is roughly the number of phones that will be sold in Thailand during the quarter. On a global scale it doesnt really even register.

As for Thailand.... well it isnt really relevent. It wont be available here until the end of the year at the earliest. And to the best of my knowledge, the hacked ones dont really work properly.

It seems to me that it all has gone a bit quiet... probably because it wasnt worth making much of a fuss about in the first place.

It looks like a decent first effort by Apple and the good news is - as others have pointed out - it should give manufacturers the kick up the pants to produce something that really works. Meanwhile, in Thailand, we dont have either the networks or the product for a proper working handheld notebook/phone/organiser.

Already alternatives with similar interfaces from known makers of "smart phones"! Better feature set, no need to hack & priced lower!

Well Abrack considering that they sold 250,000 phones on the first day that is impressive. Everyone else who has been years in the business is playing catch. If all Apple does is give everyone else a kick in the ass than so be it. Anyhow, another 1 Millions phones and that is another 600 million made in a quarter. There are a few shortcomings, but nothing that cannot be fixed with a few redesigns, it took a while to come up with the perfect Ipod so it will take a few gens forth iPhone. I will wait until that time.

ThaidUp is correct. iPhone isn't ready yet, but I suspect it will be in the next year or so.

I'm both surprised and impressed by Steve Jobs and gang's turnaround in both the computer and consumer market. It seems like every move they have made this century has been the right one.

Apple actually aims to sell 10 million phones in the first year, which is a goal I think they will exceed, as it was mostly conservative.

Sure, compared to the 1 billion phones sold every year, that may appear to be smallish (they are shooting for 1% of the market) - but considering that the 'other' smartphone (i.e Windows Mobile) only has a market share of about 7-8 million phones, it's a good enough goal to put Balmer in his place.

To place things in perspective, both Microsoft and Palm have an installed base of 6-8 million users with smart phones, which is very small (this was in October of 2006).

Also, when you like to point out comparables to the global market, you tend to look at ALL phones (i.e. the 1 billion number), which includes every piece of crap box with dial buttons that can make calls - Apple is entering a different market, which is that of the 'Smart Phone' -- a significantly smaller sub-section of the global phone market. Smart phone sales are estimated to reach 125 million units by 2009, which means they are still quite aways from that lofty goal.

In that context, selling 10 million smart phones priced at $600, from a SINGLE vendor, is actually quite an achievement - and they will succeed in their goal.

As of today, a hack is out whereas all the features work - it involves hacking the phone AND the SIM card, but it shows that progress is being made.

To be honest, Thailand is most likely a pretty insignificant market to Apple, when it comes to Asia.

Their targets in Asia are Japan, and Korea. Japan is traditionally an Apple stronghold (the Japanese love Apple products), while Korea is historically the only market where iPod and Apple products do not sell well, compared to Korean products. This *may* change with the iPhone - but in that respect, the Jury IS still out.

Not sure what's funnier - you simply not 'getting' it, or you statement about 'similar' interfaces.
