Here's the blog of the guy who used a hardware hack to unlock the iPhone...

Soldering iron, fine pitch wire, wire cutters, guitar picks, and Red Bull.

Wait for the software unlocks - there's two that are a week or so away (commercial, you pay) and I'm sure a free version from the dev team is coming as well.

over the weekend, I saw 4 iPhones in BKK.

all in the hands of Thais, that said that they purchased them at MBK. All were up and running with either a AIS or DTAC signal.

didnt catch the price they paid for them here, and are unsure of what unlocking method was applied to them.

over the weekend I plan to check things out at MBK. has anyone seen or heard this???

There was an article in the Bangkok Post Database section today where one of the jouranalists goes around Seacon Square, MBK etc trying to get the phone unlocked. The best he managed was getting it activated it for Bt 500.

There's only one reliable unlock method, right now, and that's the hardware one which stands a 20% chance of bricking your phone. Once done, though, it appears very effective.

I'm considering doing that, or having it done, if nothing materializes before my next trip.

There *are* several software unlock solutions out there (commercial ones) that are in limbo, and one free one that I am waiting for.

Mr Alan
Apple just lowered the price of the 8GB iphone by $200 and discontinued the 4GB version.

Well Apple has been know to be setting a lot of firsts. I think this is a new record in the reduction of the ASP price of a phone. 2 months after initial release it lost 33% of its value. I wonder if those people waiting in the long lines feel short changed. Idiots!

I assume that the people at http://www.iphoneanywhere.com/ are taking a beating on their inventory of iphones.

Speak for yourself -- while I didn't wait in line for the phone, having paid the 'extra' $200 paid off hansomely for me, as it pretty much paid for itself in the first week that I used it after I had it activated, and has continued to be a terribly great tool since then.

Personally, I feel the $200 price reduction is great, as it will place more iPhones in more people's hands, which is a great thing.

Please bear in mind, that Jobs stressed during the announcement (and it keeps being repeated on literature) that the $399 price drop is good FOR THE HOLIDAYS - seeing as how Apple is about to announce the European iPhone with additional features before the end of the year, I would estimate that next year's model will come in two memory flavors, contain additional features, and retail for $499 and $599 again (or $399 and $499).

Also, no one seems to pay any attention, as the 'new, cheaper' iPhone now contains less accessories. No more dock. No more charger. Just a 'stand'. That's about $100 less in accessories (which are still included with the refurbished 8gb iPhone at $349).

Essentially, Apple is clearing their inventory, prior to next year's new model, and doing it really well, and really profitably, while at the same time their consumers are getting great deals on a very desirable, and very functional product.

Idiots? Hardly.

Hardly, as they are selling unlocked versions. In fact, the prices they are offering them for ($700 and $800) are damn reasonable, considering what unlocked phones (and until recently, not unlocked phones) sold for in MBK and Hong Kong (around $1,500 US).

That's why I'm buying a bundle of these phones,to unlock them, and take with me on my next trip (and if you want one, you get to stand in line).
