Well I just dont get Apple. One minute they are irritating customers by making them tie up to a telecom operator like AT&T presumably to make some extra margin. Next they go and knock US$200 off the price of a product which is already flying out of the window faster than they can produce it. And all within 10 weeks of product launch....

My suspicion is that it is a pre-strike to gain as much market share as possible before the introduction of the so called gPhone by Google. Or, of course, there might be new iPhones released after Christmas and they want to clean out the inventory.

Oh yeah right... scared by a company that has never introduced a consumer product in its life?!?!
Or, of course, there might be new iPhones released after Christmas and they want to clean out the inventory.
Come on they havent even sold a million phones yet, we are 10 weeks into product launch and they are clearing out inventory?

Maybe you should actually read up on this stuff, before making wide sweeping statements. They are on track with selling their millionth phone by end of September (which means, it will be sold in the next week or so, with the increased sales from the price drop), and yes, Apple is always agressively clearing out inventory before a revised, updated version of the product is being released. It's all been said before - European launch by end of 2007, which means a new phone with localizations, and Euro-specific features, which will replace the US local one right now as the 2nd Gen version. None of this is rocket science, though it appears to be to some.

Wow, Steve Jobs has apologized for the price cut and is even offering a $100 voucher for those who feel ripped off. The stock market will probably respond brutally to that, but it's nice to know that he's responding to the concerns of the customers. After all, it's their continuing purchases that make the stock valuable in the long run. EDIT IN: Let's see Bill Gates apologize for using his market share to force the world to buy half developed operating systems over the years. The $200 price cut on the iphone is a drop in the bucket by comparison and no one has to have one to be on the same page as the rest of the world.

Seems his wide sweeping statement was still correct - Apple has not yet sold 1 million phone - being on track to sell 1 million phones by the end of this quarter, and having actually sold 1 million phones as of yesterday are not the same thing. The wide sweeping statement was correct in that Apple has yet to sell 1 million phones. Clearing out inventories seems to be a bit of a stretch of an excuse considering that during the days/ weeks following the launch availability was still an issue, and several sites popped up to allow folks to check inventory/availability at different locations. So now they have gone from under-availability to overstocked in a matter of weeks? Hard to believe a company of Apples caliber could make that kind of supply chain mistake.
