Daffy, there is no denying that Apple gets a lot of things right - I have a whole bunch of ipods and I love them. But they also screw up a lot of the time - their computer business is not much to write home about. And while your not complaining about a 30% price drop 10 weeks into product launch, a lot of people are.

I think linking your product to individual telecom operators is a lousy idea and one I bet they drop pretty soon. If Apple end up selling 10m units a year - a 1% market share - they will be very much a bit player with no real market traction. Essentially they will have grabbed the phone with an ipod market and that is all - I am sure Apple was trying for something bigger.

I'll maintain that it's to clear inventory and get the stage set for the next generation to be delivered after January. The $399 is being promised and maintained only 'for the holidays', and AT&T advertises it only up to January 31st. Let's just leave it at that, because you guys all know it better anyway

Is to clear inventory code for “we are not selling as many as we wanted so we need to dump the price”?

From a CNN article – “Jobs also cited hopes for a boost in holiday sales as a reason for the price reduction.”

I don’t think the clearing inventory story holds water for a product that was so recently unavailable in many areas because of supposed lack of supply to go to needing to dump the price to clear out too much supply is a bit hard to swallow - then again so is a $500 phone.

I might be willing to buy into preping for the next generation - so that they can charge $500+ for the first suckers to line up for the next model - then dump the price soon there after. Not that this is unique to Apple look at the fools who paid top dollar for the Razor when it first came out.

Abrack you have a bit of disconnect in the market. Computer business nothing to write home about??? They moved up to #3 in the world!

Secondly, you need to understand the USA phone market. In a nutshell it is totally f***ed up and even though the cell phone revolution started there, it has now falling behind, due to regulations and the way they initially tied phones to carriers. The SIM until lately was non-existant and until recently if you changed carriers you needed to change phone numbers. Some phones features are locked down by the carriers. It is just plain f***ed up. Many people are tied to 1yr. and 2yr. contracts, so it is pretty expensive to jump ship. So I would imagine at least in the USA as people finish off contracts there will be more phone sales.

Then again when Apple releases a replaceable SIM phone in Asia which I am sure they will, the USA people will again be reminded how dismal thier implementation is.

The for one would hope this changes soon as I am tired of escorting every business associate to MBK to get their GSM phone unlocked so they can use it in Thailand.

I have to agree with TU regarding the use of a phone. Mine are for phone calls and SMS's.

I fascinates me how the Teleco's have pushed MMS, Music Downloads, E-Mail, and Phone Gaming to increase your access time, the number of MB you consume, and your overall phone bill.

With the broadband and wireless options available these days it seems to me that the most effective use of my resources is to take my 'ultra-slim' notebook, hook-up to a hotspot, and use it instead if a phone call or SMS will not do.

This discussion of the iPhone has become a 'tempest in a teapot' IMHO...

Daffy Apple doesnt have a computer business worth talking about - sub 10% market share every year for the last 20, sometimes makes money, sometimes doesnt. Hardly worth the effort. They may have eventually carved out a profitable niche for themselves of techno-geeks but who cares.

I hope that isnt going to be there approach to the mobile telecoms market. I kinda thought they wanted to be a real player. Want to know why Motorola and Nokia arent exactly quaking in their boots? Well 1m sales in a 1bn market isnt really going to register. If you limit yourself to the US, tie yourself to AT&T and then shoot yourself and your customers in the foot with a 30% price cut you just sit around the office sharpening your pencils and laughing.

Reminds me of Sony and their PS3... know why they are not worried about poor sales? Cos their PS2 is still outselling the xbox and the wii.

In reference to my earlier post the following article was on CNN International today:

Convergent Devices

I tend to agree with the Czech Sumo wrestler (on the other hand it is not a good idea to disagree with a sumo wrestler anyway)...
