Reminds me of Sony and their PS3... know why they are not worried about poor sales? Cos their PS2 is still outselling the xbox and the wii.

Bad example using SONY.

The chief architect of Sony's PlayStation game console has stepped down as the Japanese company struggles to defend its dominance in the video game industry and revive its reputation as an electronics pioneer.

Ken Kutaragi, 56, stepped down as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s chairman and group chief executive, the gaming unit said. The unit is now headed by Kazuo Hirai, SCE's former president and chief operating officer.

Kutaragi had already been relieved of day-to-day responsibilities as president last year but stayed on as its chief executive and chairman.

Though no longer a board member, Kutaragi will hold an advisory post at the gaming unit, according to SCE official Sayoka Henmi.

The departure of Kutaragi, an icon among gamers, marks the end of an era at Sony Corp. that saw the company long dominate the video game industry with its flagship PlayStation consoles.

But it also highlights troubles at Sony amid a series of blunders over the rollout of its PlayStation 3 and intense competition from Nintendo Co.'s popular Wii console and Microsoft 's Xbox 360.

Kutaragi's most recent brainchild, the PlayStation 3, has been marred by embarrassing production shortages and a $600 (EU440) price tag that some fans said was too steep, forcing Sony to give away free games and other marketing gimmicks to spur sales.

Sony has also struggled to expand beyond the young, male demographic of "hardcore" gamers -- unlike the Wii, which has actively targeted women, young children and older gamers. Sony's market share has shrunk as a result.

Tokyo-based Sony shipped 5.5 million PS3 machines in the fiscal year through March 31, fewer than the 6 million the company had targeted. Nintendo shipped 5.84 million Wii consoles worldwide during the same period.

In the latest slip up, Sony was forced to apologize to the Church of England for a violent computer game that features a bloody shootout inside an Anglican cathedral.

The PS3's hefty startup costs have weighed heavily on the company's fight to drive up profit in its core electronics division. Sony is not expecting to post a profit in its game business until the fiscal year ending March 2009.

The flop has added to the woes facing the maker of the iconic Walkman, which has also ceded its leadership in portable music players to Apple Inc.'s iPod.

If Apple end up selling 10m units a year - a 1% market share - they will be very much a bit player with no real market traction. Essentially they will have grabbed the phone with an ipod market and that is all - I am sure Apple was trying for something bigger.
Abrak, I STRONGLY reccommend you watch the iPhone introduction keynote from MacWorld in January 2007, as Steve Jobs completely lays out what their strategic plan during that keynote -- and it is precisely to grab 1% of the market, which is 10 million sales, in the first 18 months.

Seeing as how they apparently sold more iPhones in the past 48 hours, than during the iPhone's original launch, they might very well meet and exceed that goal, if they continue this agressively. Nearly EVERYONE I know over here who held off on buying an iPhone, bought one in the past 24 hours.

You can watch said keynote here, and I really suggest you do (it even has a 'iPhone only' section) :

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/mwsf07/

Also, they set out for a piece of the SMARTPHONE market, not for a piece of the cheap-O phone market. The iPhone does not compete with free or $50 mobile phones - but with smartphones. Look up combined sales numbers of 'smartphones', and established market numbers, and get back to me. You may be surprised to find that selling 10 million smartphones in that market would catapult Apple into the #1 spot in that category, displacing Windows Mobile with an easy lead.

...and now, by dropping their prices, they have actually shifted their target slightly down -- offering a smartphone, for mid-market prices.

Whatever you do, don't give up your day job...

Then again when Apple releases a replaceable SIM phone in Asia which I am sure they will, the USA people will again be reminded how dismal thier implementation is.
The big advantage of that will be to give the hackers a target to duplicate on the US model of the phone, though before too long, I suspect, that the US versions will be unlocked as well (once the law passes through congress that makes it illegal to lock a phone)

The for one would hope this changes soon as I am tired of escorting every business associate to MBK to get their GSM phone unlocked so they can use it in Thailand.
Even if an unlocked phone exists in Asia, the US phones will, by default, still be locked for the foreseeable future.

With the broadband and wireless options available these days it seems to me that the most effective use of my resources is to take my 'ultra-slim' notebook, hook-up to a hotspot, and use it instead if a phone call or SMS will not do.
..or use an iPhone, then you don't need either laptop, or hotspot... which is partially the allure and benefit of an iPhone... oh, and it makes phone calls as well.

Abrack you have a bit of disconnect in the market. Computer business nothing to write home about??? They moved up to #3 in the world! My point as well, and now that Abrak has illustrated how disconnected he is from reality (or rather, that he really needs to do more research), it's kinda pointless to continue down that road.

Daffy Apple doesnt have a computer business worth talking about - sub 10% market share every year for the last 20, sometimes makes money, sometimes doesnt. Hardly worth the effort. They may have eventually carved out a profitable niche for themselves of techno-geeks but who cares
No offense, Abrak, but you are completely disconnected from reality in this case, as TU pointed out, and you really should research your facts before shooting off such sweeping commentary. They had 4 billion dollars in he bank, free and clear, from their computer business, and debt free - which is hardly ' hardly worth the effort', and which actually placed them in a much better financial situation that hp or Compaq, at the time.

They had 6 billion dollars in their coffers, from their 'hardly worth he effort' computer business when they launched the iPod.

It's almost pointless to continue this. You need to get your facts straight before it's even worth continuing down this road.

Want to know why Motorola and Nokia arent exactly quaking in their boots?
Nokia and Motorola might disagree, as they are actually QUITE worried about Apple. Again, the best Nokia can do is show a movie at recent IFA where they ripped off the iPhone design. The best Motorola can do is... nothing.

Make no mistake - while Apple is currently shooting at the high-end phone market (just as they did the high-end MP3 player market), they will eventually target the mid and low-end phone market (just as they did with the nano and shuffles) - and when that happens, the rest of the industry will still have done nothing.

Look at the history and the market sweeps of the iPod, to get an idea of Apple's strategies -- and with all that being public record, and freely available, the rest of the industry will still do absolutely NOTHING.

Why?

- Western companies are simply complacent, clueless, and pathetic.
- Chinese companies are incompetent when it comes to innovation or creativity.
- Korean and Japanese companies are creatively incompetent.
- None understands what consumers want.

Yes in this case I will choose to believe what Jobs said:

From a CNN article – “Jobs also cited hopes for a boost in holiday sales as a reason for the price reduction.”

IE - Dump the price to increase sales.
