OK so the question remians, are you still on the hook for a minimum, $1440 plan with AT&T even if you decide to use your own SIM card?

If you currently are on an ATT/Cingular mobile plan, purchase the iPhone and add a minimum $20 per month data option to your existing plan.

You will not be able to replace the ATT SIM with a SIM from another carrier. The iPhone is locked to the ATT network.

The iPhone has a SIM slot. It's been very much publicized.

No iPhone in BKK yet, but a lot of SLIM slots.

We do not know that yet.

Allegedly what you can do is buy the iPhone, activate it, and after two weeks cancel and pay $175. The iPhone features are now activated, yet you have an AT&T less iPhone.

There are conflicting reports wether the iPhone can be used with a non AT&T SIM, or not - and I'll find out as soon as my buddy fedexes one to me in Thailand. Either way, it will be interesting to find out how long it takes for functional unlock services to be offered.

After all, the whole myth of 'no expansion apps for iPhone' kinda fell apart over the past 24 hours.

The question is what do you have after cancellation? Just an iPod (but this still would be the greatest iPod!) or a phone+iPod???

From Apple's iPhone Q&A, this extremely unhelpful snippet...

Can I use the SIM card from my current mobile phone?
You should use the SIM card that came preinstalled in the iPhone.

should, should... rather vague isn't it...

And from Pogue in the NYT

Can I use a SIM card from another phone? The iPhone comes with an installed SIM card, the tiny circuit board that stores your account information and phone number. Apple says that you should be able to replace it with any recent AT&T card, once you activate it in iTunes. No other company’s SIM card works in the iPhone.

Hmm... If Pogue is right, I read hope here. It means it is using a standard SIM and this gives hope that it can be somehow unlocked (and we may be in the best part of the world to find the persons who can do it, if it is possible at all...).

So much uncertainty...

Apple is talking about shipping a million phones in the first year

from what im seeing from our american friends that the contract tied to the phone is pretty shitty value for money

a two year contract you have to be joking !!!!

it looks like Vodaphone are going to get european distrubition of the phone and are currentley haggling over contract structure

what I think is going to sink this phone is the demands made by apple over the phone companies

its just making the device expensive and unappealing which leaves the die hard apple fans to be screwed

especially when you have all the major phone manufactures releasing new phones on a weekly basis and the the phone companies offering up different call
rates and added extras

and lastly do you think those phone manufactures will sit back and let an upstart company like apple take over the phone market ??

nyc boy
a friend of mine working at the APPLE store in nyc, got a hold of one to play with last night. He mentioned that after a quick look and play with the model (and after S. Jobs gave his speech that all full-time employees and 1 year temps would receive a FREE 8GB model) that it does have the wow factor.

He mentioned that MAC OS takes up nearly 1 gig of space. just below in fact. so that's pretty hefty, it weighs in more if APPLE does truly in fact planning on software releases (probably for.99 cents) as time goes on.

An interesting note, is that S. Jobs and co. will have another press conference on Monday for Europe, where its rumored the 3G model will be released via Vodafone and T-Mobile. Sad that the Edge version was sent to the US, but I read that he did acknowledge the slower Edge network; but in fact said that using Wifi would increase the speeds.

I look forward to hearing the upgrades for video capability (its touting youtube viewing, but you can't record) ; JAVA and FLASH support (probably will happen later) ; Memory expansion support or bigger HD space (its a video phone, how can I watch my DivX movies and porn??) ;
home brew hacks and stuff, things to watch and read on the tech sites.

In all fairness, even with the proposed costs (hell a iPod nano 8GB is near $240; so with a few more bells and whistles its not too far off) ; as mentioned before by Daffy just buy one, activate, and cancel by paying $175 (its steep but not too bad, especially IF you CAN change the sim card to other carriers)

worse case if you do the above, you have a expensive ($675 or $775 + taxes) iPod that can take pictures and surf the web, but then again with Wifi capability VoiP (skype and others) comes into play....

Because Apple controls the software on the phone, no way to get a Skype client on there.

Sure hope that this comes online in the future, though. Using Skype on an iPhone over Wi Fi would be the shit. No need for any freakin' cellular service plans that way, either.

One of the other things that leaps out at me is that Apple did not include the iChat client.

I guess that they want you to use SMS, so that ATT can sell you a service plan.
