Warranties on brand name digital cameras from Pantip or anywhere else are manufacturer's warranties, not a warranty from the retailer. The warranty is as good as anywhere.
Actually, the warranties are offered by the importer/distributor, which is usually (but not always) owned by the manufacturer. Some manufacturers have more than one subsidiary around the world that distributes their products. For example, CanonUSA (owned by Canon in Japan) does not honor warranties for Canon cameras purchased outside of the USA.

So look for products with wordwide guarantee.

In most Big Cs there are branches of 'Best Camera'. Good collection and reasonable prices.

Worldwide or "international" warranties for most cameras distributed outside the USA are usually not honored by the USA distributor (CanonUSA, Nikon USA, etc).

Maybe the USA is the exception, but that's they way it often works. One could ship the camera to a warranty facility outside the USA, but that is quite a hassle for USA residents, especially since internet prices are cheaper for cameras imported by the official USA distributor than prices in most other countries. There are some notable exceptions such as Mamiya America Corporation (which is not owned by Mamiya Japan), but they don't sell consumer digital cameras.

The USA always is suspicious about the outside world....try cashing a travellers cheque...eeek...you are foreign....feaaaaaaaarrrrrr!!!!!

I've used a Thai issued guarantee in UK without any problems.

It is not the USA that is suspicious. The Japanese owned marketing subsidiaries (CanonUSA, NikonUSA, etc) simply do not honor the international warranties for products sold outside the US.

You have to understand that warranty expense is a marketing expense, and the Japanese companies usually have a separate USA marketing subsidiary. These USA subsidiaries buy the product from the factory and markup the cost to cover distribution, advertising, and warranty expense. If they honored warranties for cameras purchased outside the USA, they would be paying for something (warranty service) that they received no profit on from the original sale.

Also, the products themselves are sometimes slightly different for the USA market, such as PAL vs. NTSC, software, power cord plug, etc.

In addition, warranty terms are regulated by US federal (and sometimes state) laws, so the terms of the warranties are usually different in the USA.

Moral: if you live in the USA, buy before you travel overseas. Besides, it is almost always cheaper in the USA.

That reminds me, that every time I return home to the USA from a trip abroad with some extra travelers checks, I take them to my bank to deposit them in my checking account (the same bank where I purchased the travelers checks). They are always very suspicious and they make me write the travelers checks to myself, and then endorse them on the back, and show 2 types of id, just to deposit them back into my own account.

I think a lot of people in the USA are suspicious of travelers checks, and it has nothing to do with you being a foreigner. Travelers checks are not used as much anymore inside the USA, since by law, consumers are protected by fraudulent credit card use, and businesses do not mark-up the price for using a credit card (that I have ever seen). Even many fast food places take credit cards in the USA.

It is my opinion that these country warranties are also related to the limitations of 'grey imports'.

Yes, because the official USA importer is the one who pays for the warranty repair, not the manufacturer. Even if the manufacturer owns the subsidiary marketing company in the USA, they have to keep separate books, and they are measured on their profit or loss of their own operations. The USA marketing company is not going to honor a warranty for an item where they did not receive any profit for the original sale.

In the US it is legal to import grey market goods if the official USA importer is owned (or substantially controlled) by the manufacturer. This includes CanonUSA, NikonUSA, etc. That is why you see both “official” and “grey market” Canon and Nikon products at USA retailers such as B&H Photo. It is perfectly legal to sell these grey market items, however, the warranty on grey market items is provided by the retailer, not CanonUSA or NikonUSA.

But not even B&H Photo sells grey market digital Canon or Nikon cameras, because the products, software, power plugs, etc, are different for the USA market, and because of the difficulty of repairing such cameras (compared to film cameras) if one did have a problem.

If the manufacturer does not own the official USA importer/distributor (such as Mamiya and some other professional camera lines) then the USA importer is allowed to have a exclusive trademark protection against grey market goods. However, the exclusive trademark only applies to commercial imports and not items imported by individuals for personal use. But Mamiya America Corporation will not honor any warranty for such grey market imports, and they are not even obligated to repair (even for a fee) items out of warranty.

Bollocks. Separate books mean nothing in this case. This is not a case of either financial or management accounting. It is about supporting YOUR product.

Because one way or the other, the sale wherever it happened, at the end benefits the same corporation and the same shareholders.

The company could then compensate whichever company made the service. If they made the money by selling in Singapore to a French that laters get the camera repaired in Argentina... no matter what the manufacturer made money. He should be behind his product if he claims to offer some warranty and if he claims to be a global player.

Now, another matter would be if we are talking about additional warranties provided by the selling store.

The manufacturer could easily include provisions worldwide servicing for its products in any deal they enter with a local service provider. Some top companies do. Perhaps for that reason they are top companies and real sellers of luxury goods.
