Interesting. Sounds like I really only need International Dialing, since all I want to do is every so often add baht to my number to keep it active. I don't need to accept any calls or SMSes from Thailand.

Hopefully I won't need the work permit/id card. If so, maybe I will get my TGF to use hers.

Had the number for more than 3 months, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I guess when I go to the DTAC store next week I'll find out what I need to do.

uhhh.. just a second there...

If you plan to use the card in the US to keep topping off the account... then you need International Roaming from DTAC or AIS turned on here for you to use in the US (or anywhere) to access the line...

international dialing... is for calling internationally from here (BKK) to anywhere outside... because once you are roaming.. its a different ballgame...

I'm getting the run-around from DTAC.

I want to be able to top-up my DTAC SIM when I am in the USA so that my number does not expire.

Went to DTAC office at Robinson's Suk Soi 19. They gave me phone number to call. I call it and the person who answers the call says that I can only set things up at a DTAC Call Center.

So, I go to the DTAC store at Siam Paragon. I get told that I CANNOT top up my pre-paid SIM from the USA. And, that there is no web site to do this.

Also, since I have a pre-paid SIM, to turn on International Roaming, I have to give them my Passport and a Credit Card because the pre-paid part of the SIM will not work if I try to dial from the USA.

I talked to 3 different people at the DTAC center, including one that spoke excellent English. They all insisted that I could not top-up from the USA, and that there was no way that I could avoid having my number expire if I didn't top-up as necessary.

Sounds like some other forum members have different DTAC experiences. Any suggestions?

I think two options

have your gf callinto a DTAC call center and top up your account for you can be done without your phone

Change to the permanant number option at 30 Baht a month Then just top up in Thailand before you leave. Cost 360 Baht a year.
If you have a problem I cannot remember the option name but my gf did mine from my phone after she made a call to the callcenter.
Every 1st of the month when I'm in country I get a TXT saying 30 Baht deducted and my new expirery date.

Works for me.

Thanks. I might try this later. For right now I have solved the problem.

DTAC has a promotion called "Baby SIM". Costs 50bt to join (change plans). Extends the amount of time before your phone number expires based on top-up amount.

Top-up for 300bt and get 90 days extension. Top-up 600bt (2 300bt cards are fine) and get 180 days extension.

Works for me. I'll be back before the 180 days are up.

2bt for each of the first 2 minutes. After that, 1bt per minute of calling time.

Anyone know the name of this service as it seems a better deal than topping up as I do not make that many calls.
I suggest emailing them and asking them for a descption of all their current programs.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 24 Jully 2006 :-

Sim updates needed for 10-digit dialling
==============================

"Come and upgrade your mobile Sim card free of charge at your operators' shops nationwide, starting from Sept 1 until Nov 30, or you won't be able to receive incoming calls."

If you haven't already received an SMS such as the one above, you will soon, as mobile-phone operators prepare to shift their customers into the world of 10-digit dialling.

All operators say they're ready to use the 10-digit system by Sept 1, the deadline set by the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC).

But they have expressed doubts over the ability of fixed-line telephone service providers to adapt their switching networks and older technology to face the change.

The switch to 10 digits from nine will require users to add an '8' in the middle of the existing two-digit prefix, followed by the existing seven-digit number, in order to make either a mobile-to-mobile or a mobile-to-fixed-line call. For example, numbers starting with 01, 09 and 02 will become 081, 089 and 082 respectively.

The new system will increase the potential number of telephone numbers from 90 million to 300 million, to meet growth over the next 30 years.

All new mobile subscribers, both prepaid and postpaid, after Sept 1, will automatically be on the 10-digit system with a new type of Sim card.

Everyone else will have to have their numbers and Sim cards adjusted, with a grace period until Nov 30, otherwise they cannot receive calls. The short message service (SMS) system will be fully switched over to 10 digits next March.

Wichien Mektrakarn, executive vice-president for operations of Advanced Info Service, said AIS had seen no problems so far in its trials of 10-digit dialling.

"The actual conversion of new-subscriber numbers to the new format will start from Sept 1, with our existing 17 million subscribers having an additional three months to upgrade their Sim cards at our Telewiz shops and dealers nationwide," he said.

Sunti Medhavikul, chief customer officer of DTAC, said his company's switching software had transferred to the new system since last month, and free Sim card upgrading services will be available at 350 DTAC shops nationwide from Sept 1.

DTAC has also developed applications to allow customers to edit their mobile numbers in the phonebook memory to convert to the new system.

Mr Sunti said the 10-digit system would eliminate a number shortage problem, create fairer competition and benefit overall telecom industry.

The provincial fixed-line operator TT&T, says its switching units are not as old as mobile operators claim, and that there will be no problem converting to the new system.

Am I reading this right? We have to have some kind of service performed on the SIM cards or else you can't receive incoming calls? So if I am not in LOS by end of Nov then what happens to my DTAC SIM which is supposed to be valid until July of next year? I guess I could mail it to a friend to have it taken care of but it'd be nice if I could do it all online like I do when I top up the card.

From what this says, it seems like you just won't be able to RECEIVE incoming calls if you don't upgrade your SIM - my guess is that the Sept-Nov period is just the time during which the upgrade will be performed at no charge, and you can probably get it done past that date, for a fee.

Speculation, mind you, so take with grain of salt...

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 2 August 2006 :-

Mobiles converted for free
====================

In order to spare the tender thumbs of mobile-phone users, who face the prospect of having to change all the numbers in their SIM cards from nine to 10 digits, mobile-phone operators are offering a free conversion service starting on September 1, 2006.

The service, offered by most major mobile-phone operators at outlets nationwide, will automatically change the numbers stored on your SIM card to the soon-to-be-required 10-digit number.

The simple, quick conversion will save subscribers having to change up to one hundred numbers saved on their cards.

The move follows the decision of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to introduce a new numbering plan on September 1, 2006. From this point onwards, all mobile-phone numbers in Thailand must have 10 digits with the prefix 08. For example, the existing number 01 xxx xxxx will become 081, followed by the original seven digits.

Mobile users will still be able to dial the original numbers until November 30,2006 but after that the calls will not go through. Fixed-line telephone numbers will remain unchanged.

The numbering plan will increase the number of phone numbers in Thailand from 90 million to 300 million, which is estimated to be sufficient for the next 30 years.

Mobile-phone operators will also provide this number-conversion service at the offices of their major corporate customers and some major community areas across the country, such as university campuses.

Sunti Medhavikul, chief customer officer for Total Access Communication (DTAC), said DTAC's phone number conversion system could convert the phone numbers in digital phone books at a rate 100 numbers every 20 seconds.

Besides updating phone address books, mobile-phone operators will also edit the so-called message-centre numbers stored in mobile phones.

If these are not changed, customers will not be able to send or receive text messages, even if the numbers stored contain the new 08 prefix.
