Regarding the SMS problem. I gave up ! None of my SMS that I sent from a European cell phone account make it to my friend in Thailand.
I have 100% success with sending SMS via mobilelife.co.th or sms.thaivisa.com (described 4 posts above). Granted, you will need to be online to send the SMS but it is very, very reliable. And replies to your SMS go to your Thai number so they do not cost the person in Thailand any more than a SMS to a local number (which is what they are sending).

Got 100% success rate now, too !
Beeing unable to send SMS to Thailand is something I thought I should not give up... and keep trying. As CG pointed out http://www.sms.thaivisa.com is a perfect solution to this.
Once you go thru the easy registration process you can start SMS to every number you want. It is damned cheap too. I paid 7 USD for 30-50 SMS. Cost is depending where you send from/to. I did send 20 SMS to Thailand untill now and still have 5 USD on my account. You do the math.
This works only if you have access to computer.

Sorry for being a newbie again but... is there a way to send and "receive" sms internationally via the internet? I did read the forum but all it talks about is sending not receiving. Is it possible to receive internationally sms from mobile to the internet?

I remember you could do this via ICQ. Not sure if that service is available these days. Basically, you could chat with another person on a mobile phone from your computer.
