I wonder if there is some way to retrive a number that has lapsed accidentally.
As far as I recall, there is something like a 30 day grace period beyond expiration of a number. Not sure if there's any recourse beyond that.

Still for a long term visitor/resident here a permanent number would be preferable. Apparently many Thais choose to use the prepaid service as well, but given they are using all the time lapsing would not be a problem.
Apparently, 90% of mobile users are pre-paid users, so the advantages of a permanent number may not be as apparent to locals, it seems.

I know this thread is fairly old but it seems to be the nearest to my question. Does anyone sell SIM cards if needed at Suvarnabhumi? I tried to look up that AIS 'Smart' kiosk on the net and it said re-fill cards and a bunch of other things but nothing about SIM cards.

Yes, the same AIS Kiosk in the arrivals area of Suvarnabhumi also sells SIM cards - I think it's the usual 99 Baht or 199 Baht deal.

I was also wondering about an AIS kiosk at the airport, is it easy to find as I haven't seen it.
I remember the one at DMuang was right outside the arrival exit.

Yes, this is a good one. The previous packages have usually been 1 baht per SMS, or slightly less. Hope it's there in a few weeks when I return.
