Again: the guy at 1-2-Mac (or 1-2-Apple) rocks! Highly recommended.
I'll look them up on my next trip - this is good info. Thanks!

Skip, like Daffy wrote, it's Rapidshare my man. Nothing like pulling down 1 GB in about an hour (in Thailand). And now with the new 50 GB per 5 day limit I am finding it a challenge to break that limit.

DaffyDuck: "I'll look them up on my next trip - this is good info. Thanks!"

Just to make it absolutely clear: their main business is refilling ink cartridges.

Last time I was there, they said they can still get their hands on any Apple product, but they do not carry any stock.

The technician speaks ZERO English, but the manager does. Technician is the only guy that I have ever felt comfortable leaving my laptop with!

In comparison: a friend of mine had a new harddrive installed at the Apple Siam Discovery shop and asked them to transfer the old harddrive's data over. Guess what? They did not, but instead erased all his data! Ouch!Of course he had not previously backed everything up, since the old drive was supposed to be the future backup drive. It is so painful, since that shop looks kind of official.

one of the joys of using OS X in a home & family environment is the easiness of setting up "home network". It's about sharing resources, file & folders, moving photos to and from other computers belonging to the network in the household. Here dummy's guide on setting up a home network with OS X 10.5 Leopard:

Enable File Sharing

Click the 'System Preferences' icon in the Dock.

Click the 'Sharing' icon in the Internet & Network section of the System Preferences window.

Place a check mark in the 'File Sharing' box. After a few moments, a green dot should display, with text that says 'File Sharing: On.'

Select Folders to Share

Enabling file sharing doesn't do much good until you specify the folders that others can access.

1. Click the '+' button below the Shared Folders list in the Sharing window.

2. A Finder window will open, allowing you to browse your computer's file system.

3. Browse to the folder you want others to be able to access. You can share any folder you have access rights to, but for practical reasons, it's best to share only folders in your Home directory. You can even create folders just for sharing, such as Homework or To Do.

4. Select the folder you want to share, and click the ‘Add’ button.

5. Repeat the above steps for any other folders you want to share.

Access Rights: Adding Users

By default, you have access rights to your shared folder. But you will probably want others to be able to access that same folder.

1. Click the ‘+’ button below the Users list in the Sharing window.

2. A list of the user accounts on your Mac will appear.

You can add any existing user on the list
1. Select a user's name.

2. Click the ‘Select’ button to add the individual to the User list.

You can also create new users to access your shared folders
1. Click the ‘New Person’ button.

2. Enter a user name.

3. Enter a password.

4. Renter the password to verify it.

5. Click the ‘Create Account’ button.

6. The new user will be created and added to the Available User Accounts dialogue box.

7. Select the user you created from the list.

8. Click the ‘Select’ button to add this user to the User list.

Set Access Type

Now that you have a list of users who can access the shared folder, you can further control each user's access by modifying the ACLs (Access Control Lists), which specify the type of access that will be granted.

1. Select a user from the User list in the Sharing window.

2. To the right of the user, use the pop-up menu to select the type of access rights the user will have.

Read Only. The user can view the files, but can't make changes to them, or add content to the shared folder.

Read & Write. The user can read the files in the folder, as well as make changes to them, or add content to the folder.

Write Only. (Drop Box) The user can't see any files in the shared folder, but can add new files to the shared folder.

Make your selection from the menu.

Repeat for each member of the Users list.

Close the Sharing window when you're done!

rslinks.org

or just Google, using the word 'Rapidshare' as part of the search terms -- a bunch of sites will pop up that are thinly disguised 'pay' sites (like 'pirateslinks.org', or 'warezsite.org') but most of the blogspot based ones are the ones featuring full linking to actual content.

rslinks.org is a good start.

after I had been using Leopard for a few months, Quick Look became one of my favourite new feature of OS X. The thing I find that makes Quick Look useful is that it’s really fast and unobtrusive. It pops in and out, and you don’t have to worry about opening / closing programs. Select a file, hit the space bar, and in less than a second, it’ll give you a preview of the selected file. Hit space bar again, and you’re back to whatever you were doing. If I get an email attachment, I can click the Quick Look button, and it’ll instantly pop open a preview window of the attachment. Of course, you’ll still need to fire up whatever application if you want to make edits to your documents, but if all you need is to read or preview something, Quick Look is the way to go.

Okay, two hints is enough. Time to investigate further as that is an awful lot of bandwidth you mention, BK, especially for Bangers. Since unpaid is throttled back, do you have any recommendations as to subscriptions?

PS - Agreed! Quick Look is yet another fantastic feature of OS X. I demonstrated to some friends this past weekend whilst backing up 7 years [16GBs] of their priceless family pictures which were housed on an aging Dell PC. They'd never been backed up and suddenly, there we were, two finger mousepad scrolling our way through hundreds at a time- effortlessly, I might add.

"All of which can be done just as effortless on any properly configured PC", the peanut gallery would chime in, right about now.

"Then why isn't it?", we would calmly retort.

Silence follows from the peanut gallery...

Bought a Panthip copy of MSoft office 2008 for Mac last week. 130 baht.
Works fine. Fast, got the features.

My fault for waiting this long but I got sick of seeing so many docx files coming my way and wanted the full deal and not just the extra to open them.
