And how about David Pogue's review at New York Times:
"I bought two of 'em: one for my 80-year-old grandmother," said a neighbor, "and one for my 5-year-old."

"understanding the appeal of this machine will require you not just to open your mind, but to practically empty it. Because on paper, the Flip looks like a cheesy toy that no self-respecting geek would fool with, let alone a technology columnist."

"The screen is tiny (1.5 inches) and doesn't swing out for self-portraits. You can't snap still photos. There are no tapes or discs, so you must offload the videos to a computer when the memory is full (30 or 60 minutes of footage, depending on whether you buy the $150 or $180 model). There are no menus, no settings, no video light, no optical viewfinder, no special effects, no headphone jack, no high definition, no lens cap, no memory card. And there's no optical zoom -- only a 2X digital zoom that blows up and degrades the picture. Ouch.

Instead, the Flip has been reduced to the purest essence of video capture. You turn it on, and it's ready to start filming in two seconds. You press the red button once to record (press hard -- it's a little balky) and once to stop. You press Play to review the video, and the Trash button to delete a clip. "

it's the video equivalent of a Kodak point-and-shoot camera. It's the very definition of "less is more."

the size, shape, ruggedness, low price and one-button simplicity take it places where no real camcorder would go.

The video and audio quality is surprisingly good -- not as sharp as digital still cameras, but far superior to cellphone video
It feels good to have finally reviewed this groundbreaking little camera

Next week: My take on the new RCA Victor 8-Track Tape Player.

The simplicity is nice, but still, my compact digi cam (Exilim Z250) has this red dot direct-start button for movie recording too but loads of other features as well if you need/want them... I'm afraid the flip is overprized...

One movie feature of my Z250 is extra nice: when activated it permanently records into a buffer (5 seconds capacity) before even starting the intentional recording. So if you then start recording, the last 5 seconds are already captured... Bit like a 5 seconds time machine... "If I only knew it would explode/crash/cum!/start/stop that fast/early, I would have started 5 seconds earlier..."

You're paying for perceived simplicity - it's not just the red start button, but the ease with which it allows transferring the recorded video to your computer.

I see limited life for these tyoe of extra gadgets. The world wants consolidation into one portable device not additional devices to carry around/ worry about charging and losing. The qulaity of the latest camera cellphones are same/better qulaity than this gadget. I like the videos off of my SONY C905. It has a 8.1 M camera and allows both pics and movies stored to memory card and all I have to do is open the lens cap to start it up. One button on the top toggles between video camera and still camera. Plus I set the movie mode to always use the video light so it will function as the all important flashlight that gets the most use.

Agreed -- though for one brief shining moment, the Flip Mino device owned 80% of the low-end camcorder market, because of its simplicity.

Once iPhone includes video recording abilities, plus an easy way to upload said videos wirelessly, the shift will happen rather quickly. Bear in mind, iPhone (despite its shitty camera) has quickly become a dominant device on Flickr. I suspect iPhone Video will quickly do the same for YouTube (sadly, resulting in more pure crap being uploaded).

Yes especially since YouTube does not allow any porn to be uploaded.
