Quote: from Abrak on 6:26 pm on Mar. 6, 2004 I own an ipod. BK people mean when they say that the ipod cannot be used as a generic hard drive is this... ...you cannot take your ipod over to your friends house and transfer your music collection to his pc.... (or his music collection to your pc) ...this is because... (1) you need to install drivers and software to work the ipod (2) and that software will not allow you to copy the mp3s from your ipod to your friends MAC (or pc)
As a firewire drive, it doesn't need any additional drivers, it works on all of my 3 macs, and it shows up as just like any external HD. Does anyone here have a PC with USB 2.0? I'd like to try connecting my iPod to it to confirm this.

However, not that ARCHOS does have already a new product that does much more than the IPOD: the 80GB AV300 Video Recorder. Not only can you carry music with you, but also your movies and more. It does a lot of things - you can even attach contraptions that do other things Check it out here: http://www.archos.com/products/av300_series.html?sid=j22k2o2sbyjjfyjby2k3sk
yes I know check my earlier posts very nice gadjet but at £800 in the uk you can get a laptop for that price since I spend half my life on the road its ipod for music and when I want a movie to watch then its use my laptop (ripped dvds and kazza downloads)

Have it, or rather, had it - I returned it. It has a few shortcomings: - short battery life, runs down after roughly 2-3 hours. In all fairness, driving a color display sucks batteries dry, but having to keep running aorund with the power adapter was a pain, and defeats the purpose. - lack of a speaker - requires you to use either headphones, or ext. speaskers. While headphones only works great for an MP3 player, video players are meant to be shared, the purpose of which is defeated by the lack of a speaker (even a tinny, crappy one) - heavy - but again, in all fairness, that's due to the hardware, as those drives are what gives the weight. - no true Mpeg-4 support, as it requires the DiVX drivers for playing back video. - horrible user interface when it comes to the buttons. The pros: - neat concept, and it's fun pulling it out of my pocket and playing some Bird 'Fun Fair' footage to Thai girls, and watching them go into giggle heaven. - sturdy construction. A vast improvement over earlier Archos products. - flexibility to add a firewire controller, video capture adapter, etc.. In fact, it does a very good job capturing video. - cross-platform. Mounts just as easily on the PC as on the Mac. Just pops up as another hard drive on the desktop. A bit pricey at $600+, but to be honest, if it had had an internal speaker, I would have kept it. The lack of speaker was the deal-breaker for me. Harry

> hzink, your reply is very well reasoned..... Thank you. I may return the compliment... > and no, I have not used itunes. Download it. Use it. It's free. Tell me what you think. > My only real experience with the IPOD is as stand alone MP3 player. The > experience when syncronizing was limited -I didn't like it, but it was so > limited an experience that may not be a fair one. Fair enough - though synchronizing is really as easy as just connecting the iPod. The PC/Mac detects it's presence, and starts synching up your music collection. The iPod displays a 'do not disconnect' message while this is going on. When done, you get an 'ok to disconnect' message, and all your music is on the iPod. > BTW, my first PC was a MAC. But.... then market forces drove me > away from Apple. Sad t hear this - you might want to take a renewed look at the Mac platform, depending on what you do, it may be a good homecoming. > On versatility, sadly with most people having windows PC, I think the > ARCHOS is more likely to be able to be used as a portable HD - I go and > connect it to any PC anywhere. See my post on the Archos - it does have the flexibility of being able to serve up all of its content on the drive, though the iPod does work as well as a har drive. You can't access the music though (invisible directory) as that is Apple's concession to the music industry. A small price to pay, as there are plenty of tools that let you make the music visible. > On another matter, the Apple-Pepsi ad I thought was brilliant. Agreed, as are most of Apple's switcher Ads (my favorite being the infamous Ellen Feiss advert). Noticed a few Apple Centres in Thailand, but not really man Macs in use. Pity that. Harry

> Dont mean to cause a stink, but: No worries, we're just trying to get to the bottom of this. > Battery info comes from Newspaper articles, web-reviews, and those > disgruntled customers - later confirmed by vendors at Panthip who sell > the things. The 'news' started with a bunch of indie film-makers who vented themselves with heir anti-iPod movie. WIthin days the media, as the sheep they are, picked up on it. Bad news about a success story like the iPod always brings in hits, you know...? Fact is, the iPod contains a battery, and it will run down. All batteries do. The vast majority of iPods I know (and I have tons of friends with iPods) have zero battery issues. I believe I personally know of one person who had a bad battery, but his was bad within weeks of buying his iPod. A warranty issue, clearly. Most of the folks I know with iPods are vastly beyond the 18 months mark, and their iPods are going quite strong. The only battery issue I have is that 1st and 2nd gen iPod had 10 hours, while 3rd gen iPods have 8 hour battery life. The decrese in battery life was, to me, the reason I have not yet upgraded. > This disgruntllement caused apple to change its policy... and > charge another $60USD (2,500b) for a guarantee ?? Wrong, as the ApleCare program for iPods was underway roughly 5 months before this 'disgruntlement' came to light, and something Apple had to do anyway as the iPod was the only product that didn't have AppleCare - and AppleCare is a good profit center, as only less 3% of their product have issues. Now, let's do the math - Apple shipped 2 million iPods to date. 750,000 last quarter alone. 3% of that would be 60,000 users total, 22,500 last quarter alone. Yes, lots of people, but it also means there are a lot more people out there with no trouble whatsoever. Of course, you don't hear from them > Like you say, iTunes is academic in Thailand. Great marketing, that. *iTunes* is not (the software), iTunes Music Store (the online store) is. Download iTunes. Try it. Never go back to MusicMatch > My main dislike of the iPod is that you cant use it as a general HD... ie, I > can duck over to Smeg's place tonight, and not only swap 20gb of songs, > but also 10gb of porn. I do that frequently, so I really think you need to use one. The iPod works just great as a sand-alone hard drive. In fact, iPods were used during Lord of the Rings to shuttle dailies to Peter Jackson, who played them from the iPods directly on his PowerBook - can't get any more of a proof than that, I think. Things re generally a lot cheaper in the US - economies of scale, I guess. Couldn't you buy it online and have it shipped, or do they kill you with VAT, then? Harry
