There are downsides WRT expiration of minutes but for a visitor who stays for a short time then does not need the number anymore or for someone who talks a lot, 2.5 baht per minute is worth the downside of shorter expiration.

I have been using 1-2Call for more than a year now. Typical marketing, peak and off peak charges vary greatly. Use it on Sundays, the minutes last much longer. Its also easy to activate voice message and roaming by pressing some codes. But beware the call charges for roaming is High.

I am referring only to prepay or pay as you go packages. So the 'two bill' scenario is not relevant., as of course there are no bills and no need to have international calls 'activated'.
So CAT or TOT? I think telephone users will be glad of the competition.

Since it is clear to anyone with a brain that you will not get a bill with a prepaid card, everybody would have guessed that I was not talking about getting bills for prepaid accounts. And since TOT sitll uses CAT's infrastructure for international calls - not much of a competition I would say. But let's just leave it at that as you clearly know it better

Since me and MrsLove move around in bangkok all the time, we bought two Orange sim cards in MBK.
The price: THB 199
Conditions: 1 baht (10pm - 6pm)
Free time: 50 baht immediately and 50 baht for the next 6 months
I was surprised that on both sim cards we received THB 400 free credit instantly until October the 4th.
I called the Orange call center and asked her why it deviates from the official promotion (i didn't complain though).
She asked me how much I paid for the sims and replied 199 baht. Then she laughed and said that these sims usual sold by Orange for 400 baht with free calltime
THB 350 + 50 baht and another 6 months 50 baht.
So... total 400 + 300 = 700 baht free calls on a 199 baht sim. Plus 1 baht calls during 20 hours per day.
(The first 30 seconds are 2.5 baht though).

sure enough orange sounds very cheap & if going back to UK prepaid roaming works with Orange UK to still receive sms etc 
however international sms is 9thb as opposed to 3thb with dtac & one always wonder how much is MMS & GPRS usage?
