It was reported in the Daily Telegraph (London) yesterday that iPhone service will be provided exclusively by O2.

To sign up with O2 one is required to sign a 2 year contract that will cost a minimum of £820 over the life of the contract.

At current exchange rates that is about $70 per month and provides 200 min talk time, 200 SMS, and unlimited Data and WiFi (Data and WiFi is limited by a 'Fair Usage Policy' that does not appear to be clearly explained on the O2 website)

Any attempts to unlock the phone will void the Apple Warranty.

The only retailer (other than Apple) that will sell the UK iPhone will be the Carphone Warehouse.

Sounds like a hassle to me, I will stick to my Nokia...

This, the Euro price, is nothing new. Apple has had numerically similar prices on all their products for years - i.e. a product for $1,999 was usually priced at €1,999 as well. This is nothing new - you only catch on, and object, now?

Bear in mind, years ago, when the dollar was strong, this actually was value parity - now we see this huge price disparity due to the dollar's slide into the basement. Simply means that there will always be a good market, now more than ever, to grey market import phones to Europe (just gotta figure out how to flash the firmware to the Euro version).

OK im way too lazy to read all the posts so sorry if im asking something that has already been covered.

Is the Iphone available in Thailand (unlocked) and if so how much?

It is to be released in the UK in a couple of weeks for a stupid price and only available on one service, man that sucks.

While unlocked iPhones are available, you might be paying again and again to keep it unlocked...

Jobs said the company would actively work to suppress iPhone unlocking hacks.

“It’s a cat-and-mouse game,” said Jobs. “We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it’s our job to stop them breaking in.”

This is the first time Apple has officially said it would try to stop attempts to use the iPhone on other networks.

Putting on my predictor hat, I don't think it requires any tea leaves to predict that today, Apple will announce the availability of the iPhone in France, with an exclusive distribution deal for Orange, and available for €399. Plan pricing and details to be announced, I'm sure, in the next 10-12 hours.

Same phone as elsewhere, 8gb US model with new firmware.

As for China Sailor's bad memory:

> To sign up with O2 one is required to sign a 2 year contract that
> will cost a minimum of £820 over the life of the contract.

The contract is limited to 18 months, not two years.

> At current exchange rates that is about $70 per month
> and provides 200 min talk time, 200 SMS, and unlimited
> Data and WiFi

The pricing plans (or, tariffs) are:

Unlimited data for all plans
£35, 200 minutes, 200 SMS
£45, 600 minutes, 500 SMS
£55, 1200 minutes, 500 SMS
18 month contract.
Uses EDGE

While $70 for 200 minutes sound rather steep, this plan includes 'unlimited' data (capped at 1,400 web pages loaded per day)

> Any attempts to unlock the phone will void the Apple Warranty.

Doesn't say so anywhere, and since the unlocks are software based, that's kinda hard to enforce, anyways.

> Sounds like a hassle to me, I will stick to my Nokia...

So, you are claiming that these services are (somehow) a hassle, and thus you claim preference for your handset...? How does that go? Could you be mixing up Apples and Oranges any more...?

I'd be curious how much you would rake up under the regular Pay-As-You-Go data rates plan, versus the 'unlimited' plan, with regular usage - keeping in mind that an iPhone user will use more data, simply by the nature of the iPhone. Me feels that you would quickly be paying multiple times the flat rate plan's fees, in your quest to avoid some mythical 'hassle'.

Weak.

This may be true initially, but eventually the hackers (the non-commercial group of youngsters) will figure out and reverse engineer Apple's own unlock signal (which needs to exist, as Phones in Europe MUST be unlocked, when requested, by law. While Apple may play this game of cat and mouse for a while, eventually it ends.

In the interim, you should buy from a reputable vendor, who will try to provide you with unlock services and information, beyond the initial sale/service. More on that later.

Me thinks he could simply sign up for one of the flat rate data plans (if not already signed up for one) already being offered by Vodafone, T-Mobile, Hutch (3), Orange, and soon to be offered by O2 - and aovid the of the pay-as-you go services all toghter.

Additionally because he will be using 3G and not EDGE he will get his data faster.

So, it all comes back to the same question I asked several times, and which continues to remain unanswered - how much experience do you have with 3G service? How much experience does CS have with 3G service? If the iPhone, right now, did have 3G - what would you do with it?

I happen to have 3G (in the form of EVDO) and I happen to be able to simulate that kind of situation on my iPhone, and it is NOT what it is cracked up to be, but I would be interested in your experiences...
