I am a bit mystified by the lack of 3G. A mate of mine in the UK said 'why bother with wifi when you have 3G? My tech guy says that a wifi connection uses way more power than 3G. (This makes a lot of sense given that wifi is land based and 3G mobile.) So I dont quite get Steve Jobs comments about 3G handsets and very short battery time.

I think the point Mr. Jobs was making relates more to expectations that Apple has in their products. They had a certain target they wanted to meet for the battery life, and based upon current technology that does not seem to be possible if they include 3G. Thinking along the lines of what many people do with laptops it might be more functional if there was a way to easily charge/ store/ replace extra batteries, and then this might be less of an issue.

Valid point, but it is cheaper and more convenient (again, to me, at least) to carry an extra charger, or to keep chargers in the car and office to plug in to -- plus, seeing as how iPhone cables essentially give you access to USB for charging as well, there are plenty of options to keep your iPhone powered. Under normal usage (i.e. past first week geekapalooza), I get a full day's of usage out of mine (5-8 hours, based on use), and with plugging it in during rides, or at the office, it lasts a good 16-20 hours before I need to worry. I bought one of those emergency chargers using AA batteries, and keep it stocked with rechargeable AA's, so if I ever do run critical, I just plug it in, and it's good for 2-3 full charges on the go.... (and, being the ultimate nerd, I also have a solar powered iPod compatible charger...

Apple iPhone warning proves true http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7017660.stm Anyone daft enough to update their phones software has apparently been screwed by Apple. In fact, it appears that the software update does little else... Presumably the boys at MBK have unlimited supplies of the iphone 1.0.0 for at least the next few weeks.

Well I could see this coming in some way shape or form. The appeal of apple products, to me, is that you can be a user instead of a software engineer. What I dislike about PCs is you damn near have to be a software engineer to keep your computer intact. I initially declined to buy an iphone as I live outside the US right now and the contract was a deal killer for me. As far as hacks go, well they weren't designed by the maufactureer, the one party who has an interest in not introducing something that will compromise their products performance. So naturally all bets are off when you hack something. You've pissed in the kool aid so to speak and can't get it back out. For the original price of the iphone I decided, it will give me the choices I want or not be chosen. I shouldn't have to finish engineering the product after paying $600 for it. If people understood how apple tries to meet customer demand, they would have held off until something more suitable comes along, like the ipod touch and keep your current cell phone. Oh well too bad they learned an expensive lesson in trying to be a DIY software engineer, that does suck.
