The update actually brings a bit of added functionality, and added features along with it, as well as closing a couple of security holes.
Apple even posted a video about the new features:

The whole point of these updates, aside from introducing added features, is to also close security holes -- since the iPhone hacks took advantage of such security exploits in the past, as Apple was closing these vulnerabilities, it also affected the hacks. This is actually a DESIRABLE outcome, much to the chagrin of those desiring unlocked phones, as you should want a safe and secure iPhone, in order to avoid the mess that Nokia's Symbian phones have become (albeit great phones in their own right).
It is not, after all, Apple's job to dance around unsupported hacks of their hardware, particularly if these hacks exploit vulnerabilities.
The whole issue of unlocking remotely will come to a conclusion within the next 6 months, as European iPhones reach their 90 day and 6 month marks.

Saw a guy from Singapore with an iphone last night on Soi Cowboy. He could hardly wait to sit down and show his phone to the ladies. Once it became clear he was not buying the lot of them drinks the numbers soon dwindled to a single lady (which he did buy a drink for).
Upon her return she said the phone worked better than he did? Maybe he has a firmware problem?

That little investment has paid off nicely so far -- might as well pay for my trip (if I sold, which I won't).
Actually, I bought some more in the interim. Good holdings.
I'll be bringing a couple of those with me on my next trip. Apparently, the latest firmware is nicely hackable for region-free unlock (must be an older firmware, though - if the phone comes as recent firmware, it's a bitch, I understand).
